Hi everybody, I was wondering if a Slann in a TG unit was allowed to cast The Penumbral Pendulum and the Purple Sun of Xereus? Both spells require a template from the Slann towards his target and hitting every model it touches. This would include the front rank of the TG unit and the rulebook specifically prohibits the caster from purposefully positioning direct damage or vortex spells to hurt friendly models.
That is a fantastic question and I honestly don't have the answer. It would seem to me that RaW would say no but I can't see RaI not allowing one of the strongest magic users in the Warhammer world to use all of the spells. 7th ed had a similar issue with burning head and having to possibly sacrifice a TG to get the spell off, but it was usually worth it as they would save typically. Whole new set of problems now with the not being able to target if any of your models can be hit, guess we need another FaQ
In 7th burning head always hit a TG on the way out. In 8th those templates are specific that they are placed just touching the base of the caster and move away from there so I'm pretty sure that they would kill a few TG on the way out. This makes the lore of death more appropriate for a lone slann.
Check the new 8th edition FAQ it mentions casters using vortex spells and did a lot of Eratas and FAQ's on it.
Does the Purple Sun of Xereus start form the caster, I don't see that in the brb. The spell only goes on the caster if the artillery dice misfires. Samuel
with the purple sun, you choose wear the starting point it, it doesn't start at the caster. it only starts at the caster on a misfire, which is supposed to hit your guys as punishment for the misfire. With the pendulum, you measure it as a canonball, so the bounce is a minimum of 2", 2"-10". so no danger there really. I used the purple sun in my last game with daemons, and it hit over a unit of plague bearers. 17 WOUNDS... WOUNDS, not hits, and then i regained 9 casting dice.very very nice.
To cast a magical vortex, you place the template in base compact with the bearer, and then roll distance, So no, the slan can't cast them in a unit of temple guard, at least not till the FAQ
Well, you can cast it if you really like... and if you feel that TG are feeling Ninjalike today and can pass their I tests... Incidentally, I had a funny 4500 point game today, where Karios Fatewear killed nothing the entire game but himself due to a Purple Sun misfire... And Tetto'Eko blew himself up along with 25 skinks... it was a bad day to be a wizard. ^^
Technically not since the magic rules say that you cannot intentionally hurt your own models with damage spells, nor can you hex them, nor can you buff the opponent. There is already FAQ's out, so unless there is another I think we are stuck with it unfortunately..
i think teh faq says its ok to target friendlies with magical vortexes, but not MM, DD or Hex so purple sun is ok, burning head is not ok
That's right, the war hammer FAQ towards the bottom, Say you can target friendlies with vortexes but not direct damages, So if you want to cast purple sum in a unit of temple guard you will have to take 3 initive tests.
