I couldn't find a topic that fit my exact question, so here I go. What I am wondering, is why you guys like playing Lizardmen? I'm not asking about spacific units or tactics, I mean why play the army as a whole? I'm thinking about doing Lizardmen for my next army. I am an experenced VC player and also play HE on the side. For example, the reason I like VC is because it is so versatile. For example I can make a magic heavy list and rival HE, or I can go CC and feast on the bloody pulp at my whim. I like how I can count on my units to fight to the "death". While VC doesn't have many viable units, the units we do have are very unique (mostly). No one plays LM around here so I really have very little idea of how they are played or what they are good at. I read over the LM book and you guys have some very intresting units. So, why do you play?
well, much like your VC, the Lizardmen army is extremely versatile. We have the best Wizard character in the game in the form of the Slann, some of the best CC units and characters (saurus). In fact we can create a list that is strong enough to compete in any phase against all but the most cheese-beard lists out there. As for why I started the Lizardmen, well I loved the idea behind them, the last servants of a forgotten race of Gods intent on fulfilling the goals of said gods and disposing of the evils in the world. Mostly though I loved the models.
Back in 7th I knew I wanted an army that was magic heavy and had rock hard infantry-- so my choices were narrowed down between LM and WoC. I liked the Aztec/Mayan feel of the army and it's fluff of being the "power behind the throne". I have yet to regret my choice.
For me, it was all about the models and the theme. The Aztec look, all the gold on the lizards, and then the current stegadon all conspired to send me into the jungles of Lustria, and I love the army now. It is indeed very versatile and fun to play.
Skinks were EXTREMELY cute back in 5th edition, that kind of settled it for me... I have also always adored dinosaurs and reptiles. I also wondered how an all brown lizardmen army with weathered bronze would turn out...
For me, It was all about the chameleons! I loved the idea of having scouts that could not be seen (easily) and sneaking up on their targets. At the time, I had been playing WoW (Rogue of course). That was the draw. I knew nothing about the army. I have never looked back. I do have an Ogre army waiting to see the light of day, but until my Lizardmen are complete, it will have to wait.
Lizardmen were my first army. I started playing in 5th edition, and the box came with a bunch of skinks, saurus, and Brettonians. My wife wanted to play the Brets, so I got the lizards. Then I came across Bartertown and bought tons more lizards from people who'd bought the boxed set and didn't want them (24 saurus and 32 skinks, for 10-15 dollars, can't get much cheaper). I ended up with over 200 skinks and 150 saurus in no time. But in time I liked them more for the fact that they're a forgiving army to learn with. The saurus are one of the best core units in the game and can stand up to most of the other core and some of the specials without much effort. The skinks running everywhere, the magic of the slann, there's just not really any areas they're overly weak in. I'm branching out to other armies, but the lizards were a solid one to start with but with enough variety that you don't have to do a cookie cutter list all the time.
Mostly just because I like dinosaurs. If I was smart enough, I would have been a paleontologist. There's tons of dinosaur bones here in Alberta, too - so it would actually be a good job. But I digress.
Cause I love the idea of single minded brutes battleing for the sole purpous of returning the world to it's former glory, and they have SO many painting options
I'm a fairly conservative player so what army would be better? Perhaps Dwarfs, but they don't ride dinosaurs
I like lizardmen because they are very versitile, you can go with a magic heavy slann army, a nearly indistructable saurus army, and a fast ranged legion of very cheap skinks. plus they are dinosaurs
100% agreeance! (nothing better than passing your 6+ ninja save with a cute little skink) The chance to paint tons of weird colors and the models from the starter box also helped, and dinosaurs.
I love the magic phase so the slann is a must. I also really like the mixed height units of skrox and slann in temple guard.
I've always liked Reptiles and such (i've got tortoises, bluetongue SKINK, spikytail dragon, tiger salamander) Still wondering why I started lizardmen?
I hung out at the local hobby shop when I was 8 years younger and helped paint the display models for Warhammer. They were Lizardmen and Brettonia. I took one look at the front cover of that book Dinosaurs... When I actually started to play the game I fooled around with the ideas of WoC, played Wood Elves a little, liked the fluff with Dwarves, but I could just never keep myself away from the Lizards.. Amazingly effective in the magic phase, while having a very powerful h2h ability, and a shooting phase that definitely scares ANY army (except those immune to psych ones... nothing seems to scare them), these guys definitely offer you all the versatility you need as well as unlimited color options and conversion ideas.. But in the end...
