We now have the best spearmen in the game. Dark elves can have their petty hatred and high elves can always strike first. I prefer the ability "21 str.4 attacks to eat your face after your spears bounce off of our tough hides" ability. Now i know the Sword Masters, White Lions, and Black guard could still pose a decent threat but for a core vs. core battle i believe we have this locked up pretty tight. I cant think of a scenario where i wouldnt use shields. All of my saurus (75 in total) will have them. Will you switch from hw/sh to these?

Does this mean that saurus with spears in the second rank, also get 2 attacks now?

Yes...and also remember our armor save and toughness beats most, I've personally raped Swordmasters with 6th edition Saurus, we'll smack their asses with these 7th edition boys!

Indeed. At the moment saurus arent popular. As a matter of fact.. almost nobody uses them :p GW is trying to get them back in the game. Saurus will cost less, have a better armour safe, and more attacks. I'm very much considering going "horde" style with my lizardmen with the new edition. Can't wait till i get my hands on the new book. there's a rumored item than gives all lizardmen within 12" stubborn :p Saurus + cold blooded + stubborn = win XD

did the new book come already? cuase i can't remember saurus being able to have 2A and spears in 2nd rank.

but, SUARUS FTW! they got the muscle that nobody (except chaos) got! and whit 4+ save (shields) they are also durable. :D but spears are just TOO good to be resisted, but the reduced save? :shifty:

no the new book isnt out yet, but its rumored that the 2th rank will get 2 attacks. And who cares for the -1 armour safe? the scaly skin is going +1 so theres no real difference.

In the new book, which I read not a few hours ago, spears also receive two attacks. And the 12" banner for stubborn only works on cav, though that item also makes enemy cav fear the beaer, so he's very powerful vs. knights of any kind.

Hmmm, I think I'll reconsider Cavalry in my armylist with such a banner :)

My saurus will certainly have spears. Now I'm undecided on the size of the unit, I don't think I'll go bigger than 18 with full command being 6 wide for the potential 25 attacks and large enough to maintain a decent unit size. Having 2 units of 18 sounds like a great core to me which I'm favouring. That or take a msu approach with multiple units of 10-12 with a musician.

Excellent to see Saurus are worth taking, I certainly want to see them form the bulk of my army because they are very cool models. 2 ranks of 2 attacks each at s4 sounds absolutely brilliant, who wouldn't take them? I wonder how many points they will be though.

I personally haven't read the new book, but from what a lot of people who have they are 1pt cheaper and spears are only a 1pt per model upgrade. So for the price of a standard saurus at the moment in the new book you will get spears and +1 to your save thrown in for no extra cost, this as well as there no longer being predatory fighters rule makes saurus in the new book a pretty good deal. It's just a shame they don't have a 25pt magic banner allowance, still I'm not complaining.

I'd take that any day. I used to only pay a point less than that for HE spearmen who had less strength and toughness, less attacks and less armour (6th ed). I guess the weakness of Saurus are that they have very low initiative and only average to low movement, so they will likely suffer casualties before getting to fight back. Hopefully they are tough enough to withstand it enough and deal the pain back.

What unit sizes are people thinking for them? It will depend on the rest of my army a bit, I might go to big units of 24. Otherwise I am thinking maybe 18 going 6*3, that way they will get the maximum amount of attacks out with a wide frontage, using them a bit more as elite hard hitting troops. We shall see what support I can find for them.

Personally I'd take the above 20 number with 4 wide for ranks. Also, no they can't take a magic standard, Temple Guard and Cold One Riders can take up to 50 points. Though saurus are ALOT better since we can field an engine of the Gods to give us that 5+ Ward save against shooting which might normally mow down our Saurus before they hit combat.

I think that's up to your personal choice. With the Hw, you'll get a 3+ save in combat, and with the Spear you'll recieve an extra 10 Str 4 attacks if charged or second round of combat, but only a 4+ armor save in combat.

    Dalkarius,

so, with 20 saurus, 5 wide 4 deep, when i charged i get 15 attack that round and the next turn i get 20 attack, is that correct? and why did you say that if i'm using hw i get 3+ save? scaly skin 5+ a.s. and shield give me 1+ a.s., did i missed something?

    regards,
    Mugi

Combining a hand weapon and shield gives +1 AS in combat.... And I doubt the second rank will be able to fight at all if they charge, so 10 attacks if you charge then 20 in other turns.

Remember, if you take spears for each combat you can choose to use hand weapons for the armour if required, so I would go with spears, especially if they are only a point. Makes the unit more versatile.
