8th Ed. spirit leech

sooo this is maybe a dumb question.
but I just watchd a couple of battle reps from youtube and these guys seemed to cast spirit leech into combat.
umm is that right?

You can't cast either Direct Damage to Magic Missiles into combat, so Spirit Leach can't be cast on a model that is in combat.
