Hi all, just started on the forums and I have started to collect Lizardmen. I already have the Battalion (unpainted at the minute but planing to paint after Christmas) and the book. Any recommendations on how to get it up to a strong 1000 point army?
1000 points For characters I recommend a Scar Veteran BSB ((Battle Standard Bearer, unless you REALLY like Skinks then you could use a Skink BSB. Next you'll want a general. I would recomend a Skink Priest, but an Oldblood mounted on a Cold One would work too. Core, I would recommend 15-20 Saurus Warriors or a 16 Skink/2Kroxigor Cohort if you are going a Skink direction for your main combat block. Then add one or two 10 man units of Skink Skirmishers. Javelins are slightly better than blowpipes in all-comer's environments. That's almost half your points there. The next is up to you. You could add some muscle (Ancient or regular Stegadon, Bastiladon with the Solar Engine, or Cold One Riders) or some interference shooters (Salamanders, Terradons, Rippers, Chameleon Skinks). Whatever fits your play style or you think looks coolest. I would not recommend Temple Guard, Swarms, Troglodon, Razordons, or Ark of Sotek Bastiladons at the 1000 point level. These units depend on army synergy to work well. With a 1000 point army you need all your units to be able to perform solo if necessary. Even if you play with the End Times 50% allowance on Lords, I would not recommend a Slann at 1000 points. With half of your points in one model, you will win or lose games based on your Winds of Magic roll and your games will probably not be that exciting, even when you win.
Ok, so I've worked out a Lizardmen army that comes in at 995 points. Please correct me and make adjustments on the army 20 Saurus Warriors (+ Spawn Leader, musician and Standard Bearer) 10 Skink Skirmishers with Spear (+ Patrol Leader) Skink Priest Scar-Veteran with BSB Bastiladon with Solar Engine 8 Cold One Riders (+ Pack Leader, musician and Standard Bearer) 5 Chameleon Skinks (+Stalker)
Quick example: Heroes: Scar vet BsB, Gambler armor, shield -> 2+, 5++ and will add some punch to the saurus (will go in the warriors) Scar vet, general Cold one, Armor of destiniy, heavy weapon, -> armor save 1+, ward 4++, strength 7. Godly at low point lvl. Skink priest, lvl2, beast + dispell scroll -> some magic protection and try to get amber spear, will make some holes in heavy target. Core: 19 Saurus warrior, Full command, hand weapon + shield. 2 * 10 skinks skirmisher with javelins. Just to make little pin cushions out of warmachines, monsters with low save and redirect threats. Protect the skink priest in one of them at the beginning. Special: 3 terradons riders. Drop rocks, hunt warmachines, redirect stuff away. Rare: 1 salamander, extra handler. Because who doesn't like marshmallows. This makes for a really mobile army, with lots of redirect, some tools in the magic phase, and heavy hitters in the form of kuraqs, with a solid core of saurus to hold everything together. Using weissan on the saurus and pinning the enemy in combat, then counter charging on the flank or face with the mounted kuraq is a deadly combo at that army point size. Best of luck.
I removed the individual points values. Games Workshop frowns on specific points values given for units. List is solid, SJ333, but I noticed your characters are all naked. At the very least you want to give your BSB light armor and a shield, if not some sort of magic armor and shield. Points permitting, you may want to consider boosting your Skink Priest to level two or giving the Ruby Ring of Ruin or a Dispel Scroll. To free up points, you can drop the Chameleon Skink Stalker, they are rarely worth the points. If you need to free up a few more points you can probably drop the Cold One unit to seven models or drop additional unit champions. If you are really strapped for points, you can drop a Saurus Warrior or two, but I wouldn't go below 18 models.
