Hullo everyone! I'm starting a LM army, Im new to Warhammer at all so i dont have a great idea of how to play or the rules, but some 40k experience. and was just wanting some advice as to where to start. I like just about everything in the book, so its hard to find a starting place. Im aiming to make something heading toward 2000 points. I love the idea of a hard hitting army, where each unit packs a tough punch in combat and although im a huge fan of kroq gar on his carnosaur, a slann and his temple guard seems like an offer too good to pass up on....plus i love the idea of some temple guard with chakax at the head. I was just asking for some advice on what people think would be good units to invest in
As long as you think it out pretty much any unit would be worthwhile. The exceptions I would say are swarms and temple guard without slann. Most people rate salamanders over razordons. From what I've seen terradons are my favourite, most flexible, most effective unit. Cheap in points though expensive in real money, each time I've played without them I've really felt them missing.
I LOVE my tempies without slaan! Since they are not shielding him, I can take on a much more aggressive role! These guys can fight even with chaos warriors, who ussually beat saurus up pretty badly if they dont have support.... The tempies In this manner, if you so choose to use them, should probably be equipped with a magical banner....ever even thought of the possibilities of Frenzied Guard running amok? SICK! Infact, im going to do a Tactica with temple guard....
For 240 points you get 15 TG For 238 points you get 20 saurus with HW+Sh and a musician and standard bearer (or for a tiny bit more two vanilla units of 12, more ideal in my style). I know which one works better, full stop. You are paying 5 points more per model for 1 AS and the option of a banner and champion item. This is also an entirely fair comparison as in this case they fulfill the same role. TG without a slann are a very long way from optimal, though feel free to use them if you wish, I just would be lying if I advised anyone anything other than to leave them at home if you're not running a slann. If by sick you mean sickening... you need a skink BSB for that who can therefore be baited out of the unit with ease. I see frenzy as a liability in my enemies, not something I fear. Frenzied cold one cavalry (5 attacks per model and no baiting the BSB out, who can be put on a steg) are a better synergy anyway.
Don't forget the TG get extra strength from their halberds, or they have the option for a 2+ AS and lower strength whichever suits them best in the combat. But I do have to agree that they do the same role as saurus and only a little bit better for a lot more points. One possibility worth noting is the small support unit of TG. If you take a small unit and just use them as flankers, well their high strength in the flank will mess most things up. Of course they are a little slower than skinks, but can work well. Anyway, back on topic. Chakax is really good, but he is also really expensive for a hero. Think about how many points are going to go into the unit of TG, Slann and Chakax. At only M4 nothing is going to want to touch you. If you like the Chakax model (it is very cool) use it as a scar-vet or TG unit champ like I'm going to do. It is a tough choice whether to take a carnosaur or Slann. I personally am looking forward to reaching 3k so I can field both. But yeah, almost everything in the army is worth taking. If you want a touch combat army you obviously want saurus heavy, remember to equip them with spears and you're set. Some amount of skinks are still very valuable to have as support too.
Thanks for all the replies! Well ive scanned the forums a bit and ive seen people have decidedly negative views on the kroxiors (in comparison to previous incarnations anyway) and that there are mixed reviews on cold one cavalry... I was thinking something like this as a list: Slann: Focus of mystery, Higher State of Conciousness, Unfathomable Prescence, Soul of Stone (What lore to take...im seriously lost on this) not sure on magical items to take, or what heroes to take....i like alot of them, chakax looks cool and has some really nice abilities, gor rok seems pretty awesome and there are just plenty of other options...*drools* Saurus Warriors: (20) Command, Spears Saurus Warriors: (20) Command Skinks: (10) javelin+shields Skinks: (10) javelin+shields Temple guard: (20) command Terradon Riders Stegadon - Skink priest, engine of the gods? This isnt a proper army list, but i want a hard hitting elite infantry army that massacres everything up close, but still has a variety of different units and powerful magic....would something like this be accpetable?
16 skinks with 2 kroxigors is my favorite flanking unit. 3 ranks, size, flank and 6 str 6 hits. this will mess up any unit and at movement 6 it is a very fast unit. this configuration can even tackle most light infantry in a frontal assult. just my .02$
I do rather like Kroxigors, so a small unit of them with skinks does sound like a nice unit to take, Thanks to all of ya for the help, guess i'll just get cracking on collecting now ^.^
