Steam Tanks. How do you kill them quickly and consistently? on average it takes 36 poison shots to cause a wound. Salas, wont do much... its unbreakable... Just run away?
Purple Sun, Pit of Shades or Savage Beasts of Horros on a Scar Vet or 3 with GWs if you want the kill (another option is piranha blade/bane head combo and hope for a 6 or 3). Otherwise like Hoverboy says, tarpit that thing like your life depends on it.
I've been told the tank passes all tests. what exactly would you recommend throwing under the bus? (tank) skinks?
You've been lied, it autopasses all characteristic tests save for initiative which it autofails. As for the tarpitting anything with flesh to stone can hold it up for a while. Also with its new classification as a chariot (Empire FAQ), the beasts spell that causes dangerous terrain tests everywhere and makes them fail on a 1 or 2 is very bad for it.
And what about Lore of Metal? Golden Hounds and Searing doom should be very bad for that monstruosity.
The steam tank cannot be targeted by spells that do not have a specific strength value. Lore of metal has not strength value. It is in the empire FAQ, I believe.
Those are the best ways. Is not like you need to plan to kill it...give it a few wounds ands its utility is severely reduced.
What about a more direct way? I was thinking in a few oldbloods on cold ones, ogre blades or great weapons, supported by potion of strength and/or Beast of Horrors. Perhaps too many points?
Charge it with kroxgiors. I think you'd autohit it, and str. 6 is okay. Maybe use some buff spells on the krox...
Seeing as most our stuff will only wound it on 6s you could just go for broke and try to blade of realities the thing. With autohitting its 5 LD tests per combat phase, it has to fail eventually.
Blade of Realities doesn't work, it passes all characteristic tests automatically with the exception of initiative tests, which it always fails.
Yeah, Pit of Shades would work. How about an Oldblood with Ogre Blade (+3 str.), and potion of foolhardiness, on a cold one? He costs less than the S. tank, so as long he kills it, it worth eatching him die next turn assuming that he isn't the general. 6 str. 8 attacks has to work.
Six strength 8 attacks will average 1 wound, since the steam tank is toughness 10. He still wounds on sixes. If you have a regular stegadon it is probably worth taking pot shots with the giant bow, since it can roll poison to auto-wound and it ignores armor saves anyway. But pit of shades is probably the thing that will work more often than not.
10 Chameleon Skinks can pop a wound on it to reduce its steam generation, or the life mage healing it...and they can even worry the popemobile & AL...on the way to the Warmachine nest
