So, i started collecting lizardmen. It's been like 10 years since the last time i used to paint and collect warhammer figures. I was 13 at the time and didnt know anything about painting. Anyway, i now have one regiment of saurus warriors, one oldblood champion and cold one cavalry. What would be smart unit choise next? I dont want to get the usual slann/templeguard. Instead that saurus on carnosaur looks pretty interesting choise as HG. Should i get skink priest/stegadon/skinks or what? What do you think?
Skinks. Absolutely as skirmishers, probably as SKrox (skink+Kroxigor) units as well. Salamanders. Highly effective currently. Stegadons are fun, but are only really effective in the right matchups. There is no reason to spend money buying character models until you have a lot more troops. And you make character models by painting/modeling a couple of regular guys differently.
Alright thanks, question about the CoC. Should i give them all hand weapons or spears? Or Mix of both.
A skink priest is a good investment. There's some pretty cool models for cheap that pop up on ebay a fair bit. Adding Skink skirmishers and a salamander will give you a pretty well rounded army for 500 points. As for spears vs hand weapons, you'll find a lot of tactical discussions on that topic over in the tactics forum, if that'll influence you. As for mixing, the good thing about fantasy, is it's not WYSIWYG, or at least, not strictly. I believe the rule of thumb is that if at least half the unit has the right equipment, then you're fine.
Cold One Cavalry? All they can have are spears ... hand weapons are not an option. For Saurus Warriors, the hand weapons are generally a better choice. Cheaper and 6+ parry save is better than more expensive and extra rank of attacks.
if you aren't shopping slann, i'll +1 the vote for salamanders. you'll want skink priest for some kind of magic phase, but sallies are pure $$$
I would not buy anything currently, unless you have painted every single model you own and need something to work on. Reason for this is a new book is likely coming this year or early next year, and you'll need to save up some money to buy the book and likely some new stuff that comes out. The new book might also change which models are advisable to buy. Other than that, the suggestion of skinks is a good one. You'll always want skinks of some form, especially the skirmishers. They are a great throwaway unit that can pump out poison shots.
What kind of new stuff are we getting? If they dont completely trash the core of lizardmen, i'd think purchasing skink priest and skink skirmishers would be good option. I still have to paint rest of my saurus cavalry, but otherwise my models are painted.
Currently there are no hard rumors as to what models we are getting. Normally about a month before a book release there is a slew of very accurate rumors that appear from multiple sources. Sometimes rumors come out months early, but I havent found any I believe yet. Current rumors are mostly wishlisting and we dont know which of our existing models are changing for the better or worse. If GW keeps up it's current trend however, our cavalry and krox will get improved.
It's pretty safe to say we'll get at least SOME new models to replace existing model sculpts, so I think people are saying to wait to see what new sculpts we get before purchasing. Some of the newer ones like skinks are very unlikely to be replaced/have new sculpts made for them, so you're probably safe buying those without being disappointed. ... call it wish-listing, but I wouldn't go out and buy any more cold ones just yet Oh Voice-of-Restraint-and-Reason, where were you when I needed you? I just checked my cupboard for the first time in a year, and discovered I've accumulated 200 unpainted models. 200. I get through about 5 a month, if I'm lucky
I would say go for the skinks. Lizardmen are due to get a new book in august, and this will likely lead to new models and changes to older ones. However, core units rarely change much and you can be pretty certain that skinks will still be a solid mainstay of the army.
I'd be utterly shocked if Lizardmen didn't at least get one new unit, be it a big monster or some monstrous cavalry. I think the more important thing is that new books sometimes make certain units totally not worth taking any more, which means some models you bought might wind up sitting on the shelf. For example, if the new book totally nerfs salamanders and makes razordons crazy good, you'd be kicking yourself for having stocked up on salamanders instead of razordons.
