Now, I just do NOT want to use a Slann :/ Call me crazy, but I just would rather have a combat orientated general.. Now, I was looking at the 8th edition rules for magic and there really isn't too much of a benefit from having multiple Skink Priests as it's a 1 in 6 chance to get an extra dispel dice. Now, if he fails a dispel then I can't use his lvl in the rolls for the rest of the turn but other than those two reasons I don't see another purpose for having more than one Skink Priest.. I'd give him the Cloak of Feathers and the Diadem of Power for a couple extra dispel die.. I'm planning on the army being fast and getting into combat kinda quick but the only problem I can really see is a caster that uses a lot of augment spells.. I'm trying to get my list ready for the SoCal Slaughter Tournament coming up in September so please, either talk me into getting another Priest or lets discuss a little about how I can survive without magic
I'll be following this post... I'm tired of my Life Slann list!...i want Khornate Lizards!! ...You coul use 2 Skinks Priests: A level 2 iadem of Power...and a Lvl1 with Dispel scroll...not sure if works...
not using a slann and not using magic are 2 very different things. lore of heavens ain't too shabby, and with an eotg a S Priest could reach level 3, you could also give an oldblood a wizards hat. magic with no slann. otherwise just dispell scrolls, cube of darkness and MR items
first, your crazy . second, as stated above. Give the engine a shot. thatll let you take a deliciously pimp carnie old-blood combo
I've been waiting for somebody to make this type of post. I am actually anti-Slann. Don't get me wrong, he is awesome at what he does and makes most opponents shiver at the sight of him... but I have always been one for going against the grain and so I never take a Slann because everybody already does. And, it's always a Life Slann. I don't like being part of the bandwagon. I've always been an "in your face / get across the field and into hand to hand combat" type of general, therefore, the OB fits my style. I always use the OB/Carnosaur as my general and have dabbled with using the EOTG or a skink priest on foot. I have had more success with the EOTG, I must admit. It chews up a lot of your points but you figure that you only have to combat magic for 2 turns and then you'll be in CC. Plus, you can always hope that your opponent rolls bad on the winds of magic to effectively nullify his magic phase. (Yet another reason I don't like to rely on magic.) I frequent the GT circuit and have always used the OB. Never used the Slann and it actually gives you an edge because most people that think of Lizardmen think of the Life Slann, so when they see the OB out there it kinda throws them off. In every GT that I've played in I have done well, and my highest finish was 2nd place, going 4-1 with them. I think the worst I've ever done in a GT was 2-3, and the losses were hard fought. It's still a competetive list and one that can be enjoyable. Plus, you can pimp out your OB to make him dish out some major damage. Having the EOTG for the magic defense and a few buffs here and there is key. Don't forget that he's still riding on a Ancient Steg... I usually will throw in another Ancient Steg to give me the "big dino" list. Its my favorite way of fielding a LM army. I'd say experiment with both the Skink priest, but I would refrain from taking 2. Use your points to field more Saurus warriors or other troops. You'd be surprised how effective a non-slann list can be, especially in the GT circuit. Just my 2 cents... Iggy
I was immediately compelled to click on you blog link...Nice army by the way! Tell us more! Why halberd Vs ...any other weapon (2nd hand weapon and especially magic weapons like sword of might or sword of battle, strife...etc!). EoG seem a good support...quite pricey. How does you Carnosaur survive against...say...Empire Gunline? As far as I understand, the cannon will hit rider and beast. You have a 4+WdSv for the rider...but the beast will die quickly...no? I like you V6.0 list!
@ Sapo: Hey, thanks for checking out the blog! I actually just posted another blog today so make sure to check it out. And thanks for the compliment on my army. I really try to spend a lot of time on it so it's much appreciated when somebody let's me know. I prefer to use the halberd because I like striking at Strength 6 rather than Strength 5. You have no idea how many times that's come in handy. Plus, it doesn't affect his AS since he is already at a 1+ as I have him equipped. Giving it the Venom of the firefly frog makes it a magical weapon, so that helps. It ends up being a few points cheaper than going with the Sword of Might / other weapons. Just a route that I've always gone with and has worked well for me so far. The EOTG is a nice touch for me. It gives me that little bit of magical support that I need and if I'm able to get off one of the buff spells from the LoH then it's just a bonus. The real support comes when he charges, does impact hits, attacks, and causes Terror. A bonus to that would be if I can get off the Burning Alignment effect. That does a number on enemies when I'm in close. Plus, giving him the item that allows you re-roll failed armor saves (can't remember the name of it) makes it just a little bit more difficult to kill him off for my opponent. Sure, there are some armies that have my number. There's no way around that. That's just the nature of the game and how GW has made it. Like a Skaven army maxed out on screaming bell, aboms, magic, etc... I really stand a small chance. Even dwarven gun lines, same thing. My only hope is that I can get there or hope they blow something up before it blows me up. The bottom line is that if I can roll 6's and he rolls 1's then I'll win, no matter what list I have. So you kinda take it as it comes to you. If the manage to kill the big dino's, well, then in my opinion they deserve to win. The OB is still a beast on his own! Hope that helps. Anyways, thanks again for checking out the blog. Let me know if you have more!
Hmmm I hadn't really thought of using the EoTG as the Carno Lord would take up a bit of my points. I do have an Ancient Stegadon in my list though. See, even though you have a Slann in your list it doesn't guarantee that you will have good magic defense.. The best you can hope for is a miscast and then roll a 3 and pass that miscast on to the opponents lvl 4 caster.. Thats about as much magical defense as a Slann possesses. A lvl 2 Skink priest with the Diadem of Power should be fine I think.. @Iggy, totally agree I like my magic phase to be: roll for winds of magic, cast my two spells, save two power dice. Done. I love the whole Dinosaur aspect of our army. I keep them to a minimum though because of scoring But I get a better score with a Carnosaur than a Slann so I can bring him
I am pro skink priest rather than anti Slann. It’s really neither here nor there but I thought I would clarify. The Diadem is the best choice and I never leave the jungle without it. I have also found that the Cube of Darkness, the dispel scroll and all the other items that help shut down a magic phase are not do be discounted. You will probably never want to field 3 priests but the second one gives you access to some nifty arcane items.
Im so happy I'm not alone with the no slaan I always use the OB and i always wondered why everyone used the slaan. The OB is way more fun and i think more effective at most times. I love the post dude! I cant wait to hear more
Well, I was looking at what to do with the army and I came out with: A Carno Lord BSB Scar Vett And a Skink Priest with Diadem three blocks of saurus camo skinks two salamanders ancient stegadon I think that was the whole list just about. One unit of Saurus is a Spear unit run 6 wide and four deep, another unit of HW and shields for the BSB that's 5 wide and 5 deep, and then a smaller unit of HW and shields thats 5 wide and 4 deep. The chamo skinks will be used for any lone mages or war machines. Salamanders do what they do, stegadon does what it does, Carno Lord is kitted for seven attacks at strength 5 and the carno attacks (rider also has a decent ward) and he will do what he does The plan is to just get into combat and smack people in the sides with huge hits from the stegadon and Carno Lord. The spears unit is there for the same thing, three ranks deep of attacks on someones flank. The skink priest will do what he can to stop magic and use iceshard blizzard on any warmachines. There are thee big problems I see that I will need to work around.. 1) They get first turn unless I deploy out of range of the nasties (cannons and long ranged magic) I can get torn up pretty bad on first turns.. And since I haven't had a magic phase yet I won't have any dice from the diadem yet... 2) The opponent is an augment/hex army. Me being in combat won't save me from the spells that my opponent is planning on casting into combat.. 3) Hordes.. I don't have a lot of models for a 2150 army.. If I don't count the skink handlers and the skinks in the howduh, I have roughly 80 models.. This is all just an idea There are ways to get around things. I think I could try skimming points and maybe get rid of a block of saurus (the smaller one) and get some points into another priest with a statuette of spite or something. One of the best ways to get out of trouble with magic is to be in combat (well, it WAS) and then GW come out with all of these hexes and augment spells... That is really the most troubling thing.. Also, if you position your charges well, champions for our army normally have three attacks (or you can also have a hero/lord in the front rank) you can choose to target the mage with up to three models Always a good idea.. I don't see too many lone mages nowadays and not too many people are stupid enough to try it against our army as they come to expect camo skinks from us As for hordes.. well, I have two terror causers and if i can find some big units that are positioned away from any sort of good leadership then I can always do that.. Yay for theoryhammer!! I guess the best thing is to just test this ish out!! @Goat: well, I'm not anti magic really. I'm just trying to not have a Slann like 95% of Lizardmen tourny armies have. And yes, Skinks are some very cost effective magic defense as well as magic 'harassers' @Bonak: Trust me, you aren't alone One of the reasons that I don't have a Slann is actually the fact that I just don't want to buy the model But I also agree, things are more fun without them The fight is a lot more back and forth and a lot less predictable.. Using a Slann almost reminds me of raiding in WoW... boooooring... Give me some PvP
I like Slann but I don't normally run one.I know the diadems tempting, however, I prefer a lvl2 skink priest with feathered cloak and rod of storms. It's quite reliable as it always has at least 1 uranon's bolt and it's mobile too. At worst he'll rob an empire gun line of 1 turn of shooting to bring him down. Also heavens signature will help cover your steg.
I will try this at 2k: Oldblood on Carno, Golden Sigil Sword, Armour of Destiny Scar Vet, BSB, LA, Sh, Crown of Command Skink Priest, Lv2, DS 30xSaurus, CCW&Sh,FC 10xSkink Skirmishers 10xSkink Skirmishers Stegadon Stegadon 5xSkink Chameleons 5xSkink Chameleons 5xSkink Chameleons 2xSalamander Thougths? Minimum Core, war machine hunters (...I'll need them), a Subborn Saurus block, some "magic protection"...if I can call it protection...and a I10 Oldblood...I prefer the Halberd and Vennon...but I had to scratch the points... No points for extra handelers on the salamanders...so I join them in one unit. Reports, soon!
