Hello all, this will be a bit slow at first as I finish up my current army (Nurgle WoC). I'll be playing that while I paint my Lizardmen, and it has also given me a lot of confidence (42/50 at Blood in the Sun's paint score system) that I can do my 'showpiece army'. My showpiece I mean the one that pushes my hobby talents to the limit, and is my attempt for winning paint scores!

So what do I mean by classic? Why am I going classic?

    Why classic Lizardmen?

Don't get me wrong, the new sculpts are great. I do really like the "new" Saurus in many ways, and the current Slann. However, I was first exposed to Warhammer in that old black and yellow "how to paint wargames armies" book back in the day and it has left an impression. Those old Lizard just have that "something" even if the current sculpts are better.

Also being a total history nut (I did get a degree in it, suffice to say I'm back in school for comp. science) I do love the psuedo Axtec/Mayan feel. Granted, I could just order the shields from that era and slap them on (and if I really get into painting them I might try a unit like that)... but there is just something about the old models.

The very idea of an all old model army kind of appeals to me, especially with Lizardmen. Being the oldest race, having older models may help convey that sense of being ancient. Plus it'd also make a bit of a different feel for my army.

    What is classic Lizards

I'm going by roughly 5th edition. I started Warhammer in August of 2005 (I had done a lot of historical gaming prior to that), so that dates when I got into the game. I'm thinking the Saurus before the current line... the "hunchbacks".

    Fair warning
This will be a SLOW project, and right now I'm more brainstorming and getting ideas and feedback. It might be a bit before you start seeing pictures, but I would like your thoughts.

I'm having a trouble coming up with a color scheme so far, though I do want the base color of the skin to be greenish as opposed to the blues of the GW Lizardmen. Considering yellowish as a base, but my Nurgle army was green and yellow, so I don't want both being primary colors of the army.

Also, what do you think of the idea of an entirely classic line of Lizardmen for an army?

I will be using "jungle basic" from scenic bases... to make it look nice and sharp. It'll look like a lizard temple that is a bit overgrown. Link for examples: http://www.base-x-of-war.com/html/jungle_bases.html

I'd like some thoughts at this early stage, please share them.

Looking forward to seeing how it goes. I think a lot of people around here have quite a love of the older models, so you're not alone there. There's one or two plogs already that are more or less classic-themed.

Hello, swiss, I have seen your posts on Tomb Kings of Khemri forum. Glad to see you have decided to add some scales to your diet! How about an off-tint white (like Bleached Bone or the like) to oppose the green? This would create a classic cartoon crocodile look and at least in my mind, would look really cool.

My feelings about the 'classic' 5th Ed. Lizardmen more or less concur with your own. They are beautiful. I find it necessary to have a bit of a mix, not least to meet some of the conditions of the later Army Lists. And there was no resisting the Stegadon with Engine of the Gods.

Ditto the above comments from another classic lizard lover. I agree with the need to incorporate some newer figures just because of changes in our book, but where possible I have been modelling or converting (or sculpting my own figures) to stay with that rock solid look of the 5th edition figures. When you figure our what you're doing bring on the photos! :)
