I must admit i am very new to this site and yet to read all the posts which may take some time lol. But ive noticed very few lists that people stick with. Everyone seems to be making lists to a specific enemy.

Are the days gone of making a list and sticking with it and perfecting the tactics descovering the strengths and weaknesses of it and exploiting them to your advantage and your opponents disadvantage?

I can obviously understand in tweaking a said list if it dosnt run to your play style etc and changing magic items or lores for a bit of variation its only natural and is the evolution of an extremly well played and tested army.

Ive also noticed due to the lack of such lists there arent many army blogs? With records of battles, tweaks thoughts and oppinions from the generals and peers.

To this end im aiming the question at the admin team here where could one post such a log. In the painting log,tactics or lists section of the site? As i am just starting a new army and getting back into gaming when i move home from living in london for the past 7 months.

As soon as i can find out where will be best to put my post ill start logging my entries with pictures fluff etc. Anyone else who is keen would love to see some thoughts comments and/or queries on this and hopefully a few simular blogs as there are some really nice armies on here and would be nice to see some collated information/progression on them.

You have the choice of posting an army type blog in Battle Reports or Army lists. If you are going to include your battles, then I would suggest on the Battle Reports board. It can be found here: http://lustria-online.com/viewforum.php?f=20

All the lists that I build are variations. What I enjoy most is creating a list and alternating between builds. That said, there are a few things that I will put in every list. A Slann, a couple of priest (one for dispel and one for cube), Salamanders, and Temple Guard/Saurus for the slann to bunker in are just some of the things I try to include in all lists. I have found that if I do take saurus instead of TG, I will make sure there is at least one scar-vet in the list and make sure that there is a crown of command as well.

Beyond that, I try to alter the list to try things that seem fun to me. I also want the other player to have a good time. I will not limit cheese though, and I would not expect them to. As long as we both have fun, its all good. Just Friday, I took an Ogre list with Skragg (with 4 gorgers), 21 Ogres, 3x 13 gnoblars, 4 leadbelchers, a slaughtermaster, a firebelly, 4 maneaters, and 2 Ironsky cannons. I lost horribly! I lost two of the three casters in the second turn. Both cannons failed to kill anything major. The Maneaters (geared out to be Chameleons basically with scout and poison) died without wounding anything.

This list was a 'fun' list. The dice gods hated me that day though.

I use roughly the same list in the 2000-2500 range

Slann, loremaster: life, rumination, becalming, bsb, std of discipline, forbidden rod
Priest, EotG, scroll

2 blocks of SW with FC and HW&S (20-25)
One small block of skinks with a musician (10-12)
Skink skirmishers with J&S (points permitting)

Temple Guard with FC, banner of eternal flame and dragonbane gem or dragonhelm
3 Terradons
2-3 units of chameleons

Salamanders

Obvioust there are some variations based on points, but this list usually only loses to bad luck or an army I haven't faced yet.
 
Yea i can definately understand wanting to enjoy games im not a very competitive player i enjoy the game and the challanges it presents. I find by tailoring a list to every army i face takes alot of these challanges and enjoyment out of the game (strictly my own opinion) I think this stems from being a commander in a reconnassaince platoon in the british army so a commander only has the assests he goes to war with.

I find that a good representation of this is fielding the samearmy with slight variations as thats how a real platoon,company or battle group works.

But i would definately enjoy posting and seeing others post a chronicoling of there glorys and defeats in a blog/log style approach? Then with a post battle annalysis and opportunity for others to comment?

Not sure if anyone else is for this but would make an enjoyable read and have a bit more community envolvement whilst also allowing the developement of fluff and army lists to be ongoing rather than seperate posts?

Have rambled on quite a bit so appolagies for that lo. Not sure if people are up for the idea or if ive put my point across the way it is in my head haha. But its just a thought :)
 
I think that's a very nice idea and would make for a good read.
I use my paint log as my blog for my army but having a separate army blog with just tactics and battle reports seems really nice.

I'm not that good at taking notes and pictures during the games though, but one can always try to get better.

Currently I'm in the process of starting a campaign with our group (our first) and I will definitely start a blog/log for that campaign! :)
 
In my local group, it's considered quite taboo to tailor a list against a specific army, as it takes away some of the challenge. When we make lists, we try to make one that will likely perform well against any opponent. To back this up, most of us have at least two armies so you never really know who will show up on the table.

That said, we also have our own play styles, which means many of our lists look quite similar. However, if you're not switching it up now and again to see how the addition of something new works, then you're not learning anymore. I used a large Skrox unit for the second time yesterday(the first went abysmally and turned me off of them for a while) and I was quite pleased with how they handled.

So yeah, I do the same 'army' with variations in the list. That said, sometimes you need to shuffle the deck and see what works.
 
Half the people I play are dwarves. A list for all comers leaves me many points wasted in half my games, or unprepared for others.
