I'm trying to figure out which ones to buy and put in my army. Eventually, I will own both units, but right now. I'm having trouble choosing between the two. As far as I can tell Cold Ones tend to be the hard hitters... and I mean hard Where as Terradon riders have a little more shinnanigans, but are more a hassle than a hard hitter? Am I right? And is there any advice you could give between the two?
I run both and I say terradons 110%. They are my MVP every game. I have two units of 3 and would use more if I could. They truly allow us to dominate the movement phase, evaporating enemy light cavalry and flying in and out of woods to marchblock etc with impunity.
Terradons all the way. They are crazy fast and have endless uses (marchblocking, killing warmachines, softening up a tough unit with drop rocks, charge redirecting...) Also, they are good to use in any size game, whereas I would say COR are too expensive in small games.
Yes terradons are most certainly not hard hitters, they should very rarely if ever enter combat. Really both units are in their own leagues and cannot be compared directly, they have a vastly different role on the battlefield. I think much of this will depend on your specific game style and how you like to play, but also the rest of your army is important for which unit will fit better. What else do you field? Terradons are very much a light, fragile support unit that will probably not kill their points worth but will definitely play a vital support role. Cold Ones are a very tough hard hitting unit that will often kill their points worth, but keep in mind they will be a primary target (after stegadons) for missile fire because everyone knows how hard they hit.
Well, I'm really new to Warhammer, only played half a dozen games, and haven't even used Terradons, but I can tell you that Cold Ones have definitely been the mvp's of every game I've played. As I said, though, I haven't yet used terradons, so I don't know how valid my opinion is.
Ultimately, you're trying to compare apples and oranges. Terradons Pros -Flying -Poison, ranged attacks -Drop Rocks -Good March blockers Weaknesses -Can't really fight except against war machine crews -Low LD Cold One Cav Pros -2 attacks -a unit of 5 gets 10 str 5 attacks on the charge and 5 str 4 attacks -Fear -Good Armor save Weaknesses -Stupidity -Expensive Each fills a role. Whatever your army needs, take. A bunch of stegadons can live without the cav but the terradons become a lot more important. A quick army that needs some punch will find it in the cold one cav. Cold ones rock. They're so much cooler than regular horses...
I tend to play at least 2 Steggies in most games. But at least never leave home w/o one. Then I run two Saurus units either two warriors or one warrior and one guard-depending on if I bring the slann. in most armies I have room for 1 COR or 2 small Terradons. Cost of the models is not an issue, its more of my wife allowing me to buy one unit at a time and get it painted before I buy more. I also have a list where I use 3 Steggies but I don't have room for the CORs for that. LOL
with my experience terredons suck ide go with coldones there stuipidity isnt a big problem cause i always pass it
Perhaps you're trying to use them for the wrong purpose? I find that Terradons are incredible when employed skillfully but will get squashed if you expect too much from them.
Quoted for truth. If my humble Cold one riders get obliterated by a simple Khornate chariot I can imagine the Terradons being rather killable if you use them wrong. Given their Arboreal Predators rule they have a HUGE advantage when it comes to reaching their target over the Cold ones. Basically fly into a wood/jungle and hide there so that stuff can't shoot you, then fly out and drop your rocks and fly back into another wood. (Or out of LoS in general) Cheers!
My terradons do against almost all armies - drop rocks usually pays for the unit, often twice over if there are some juicy dark riders/swordmasters etc around. And that's not considering the amount of times they've lead enemies into a wood, baited for a flank charge, sorted out some war machines...
