I haven't been able to find a good source, so maybe I just missed it or suck at searching for stuff online, but how do I make terrain correctly sized? Are there certain dimensions I should follow for mysterious terrain like forests, hills, and rivers? Or how about specific features like Altar of Khaine and the like? I know I can make them to however I'd like, but I'd like a general guideline so I can practice with terrain similar to Tournaments. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Did somebody say Terrain ? but yea, there are no real size restrictions, just try and make it playable and big enough for at least one big infantry unit. I suspect that every tournament probably has their own rules, but making something basically the size of the GW terrain is probably safe.
I have a Citadel Wood set, I measured the base at the widest points for both length and width. The base measures roughly 10.25" by 7.25". I don't own any of the other terrain kits, so I can't help you with those.
At one time 12x12 was said to be the maximum footprint. 1/24th of a standard table. 144 square inches. Items could have a smaller footprint. Irregular curved footprints are the norm for many things. Items did not need to be square (6x24 is still only 144 square inches). Rivers obviously need to connect with additional segments. Rule of thumb for scale: 1 inch equals five foot wide object, 1/60th, 12x12inches is 60x60 feet. @bhuddiver What terrain have you built before?
Thanks for the input everyone! This should get me started for sure. "What terrain have you built before?" I've only really built ruins for 40k, and some premade stuff from GW (buildings mostly, as I guessed my group likes urban warfare)
I've been given copies have some old supplements (including the Lustria one) as well as the End Times books. So far there are some good guides to making terrain!
Here a great YouTube channel that I follow for terrain making tutorials & tips... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx_aro8CTHw7ZD5H661hC6Q Give it a try; his "back to basics" videos are particularly great.
