Lord Magwe meditated on the coming battle against the Chaos-tainted invaders. Time and time again he searched the stars for inspiration, yet always his mind gravitated toward the darkness of the void between them. Darkness... Perhaps there lay the answer. As the eyes of his spirit wandered over the malignant Chaos Moon above, he became strangely fixated on the shadow, cast by his own planet, that nearly blotted it out. It was then that he knew what power of the Old Ones to draw upon. Howdy! I'm a new player (less than a year now), and this is an experimental list I drew up based around the spells in the Lore of Shadows. Normally, I throw my Slann in a huge bunker of TG and blast things, but I'll never get better if I always play it safe. So: Slann:general, shadow lore, plaque of protection, mystery, rumination Scar vet: hide of cold ones, GW 2x10 skirmishers Chief: ancient stega, war spear Priest: EotG, plaque of Tepok, drums 6 Cavalry: war banner 3 Razordon: +2 bonus handlers 24 ranked skinks: full command, 3 kroxigor The plan is to use unseen lurker to crash my high movement units into things, and steed of shadow to fire the scar vet into targets of opportunity. Shade of death will help auto-break units, with other spells for damage. Opponent:Warriors of Chaos (not 100% sure on any of this) Sorcerer lord: general, death lore, power weapon, regeneration item wizard on flying thing 2x5 knights chariot Hellcannon 2x10 warriors: Slannesh and Khorne mark, respectively 20x warriors: Slannesh mark, full command, some powerful looking guy in here From my side of the table left to right, we set up: skinks, cavalry, chief, skinks, Slann, scar vet, EotG, skrox, razors flying wizard, chariot, knights (20 warriors behind them), knights, (10 warriors behind) hellcannon with big gap around it, lord, 10x warriors The highlights: I go first and start moving my guys forward, setting up lines of attack. Scar vet fails stupidity and wanders around. Skrox and razors huddle under EotG bubble shield, fearing the hellcannon. Magic is a total wash, priest has uranons' bolt which is dispelled, Slann miscasts pit against the cannon and loses all his dice. His turn: more maneuvering, then catastrophe strikes as his flying guy hits the cavalry with fire of Tzeetch and kills all but one! (who passes his check) The lord tries some hijinks, which I dispell. I grit my teeth as he guesses dead on the big skrox unit with the cannon- which then misfires and charges forward absurdly far, stopping just short of the skrox. Phew! Next turn: Burning alignment goes off on one group of knights and warriors respectively, killing a single knight. The thunderbolt is dispelled again, but the Slann catapults the scar vet through a gap with steed of shadows, right into the enemy general! Pit is cast on some knights with ultimate power, but they all pass with high init. Skinks shoot up the flying magician, wounding him. The other skinks, razordons, and all 24 ranked skinks shoot the large target hellcannon, killing it's crew and taking it down to one wound. Scar vet wounds the lord, who regenerates from some item, and combat draws. On his turn, the rampaging, leaderless hellcannon crashes into the skrox, with one kroxigor taking 2 wounds before they manage to hack the monstrosity down. The chariot and intact knights charge the stegadon chief, center skirmisher unit and the lone cold one rider, who all flee with plenty of room to spare. His lord steals a wound from the scar vet, and then slays him with his magic weapon! The following turns all kind of blurred together, as this is where things started to get exciting. In short: The chief and skirmishers rallied. The Slann cast unseen lurker on the chief, allowing him to ram the chariot and destroy it (as was the plan, risky as it was). It carried past the knights well into his lines, ending up alongside the big block of warriors. The Slann then tried another spell, miscast again, and lost a wizard level. Meanwhile the razordons, who had been harassing the small Khorne warrior group, got charged and didn't misfire a single shot, wiping out all but four of the remaining enemies. (These units stayed locked in combat the rest of the game, with all the razordons getting killed and the handlers rolling 3 ones to stay in it the last turn) The engine didn't have line of sight to charge, so it fired off burning alignment and wounded the lord and the other small group of warriors near him. Both charged it on their turn, hoping to assassinate the priest. (Chaos magician lords are apparently, as the unfortunate scar veteran found out, very nasty in close combat; otherwise I'd call this crazy) The group of four knights charged the skrox, finishing off the wounded kroxigor and badly hurting another. The kroxi caused two casualties of their own, then ran down the survivors, and, guided by the Old Ones themselves, crashed into the flank of the warriors fighting the Engine alongside the enemy lord- which combat we had not fought yet (ya!) The warriors and general broke from the overwhelming mass of skink bodies, managed to escape, but were then run down or chased off the table in the following turn. Elsewhere, one group of skirmishers shot down the flying thing before being smashed by the other unit of knights, who had lost two of their number to a lucky pit of shades cast. The chief rammed his stegadon into the large block of warriors, killing many, but was himself slain the next turn when the mighty hero in the unit slid over into combat. The stegadon held out, and that was the game. We didn't figure up point totals, but I know he killed 489 points worth of lizardmen, and all he had on the board at the end was one unit of knights, half points on the small warrior unit still fighting the razordon handlers, and the big warrior block with hero, which may or may not have been at half strength. While this battle was won with 90% luck, I love the way the list played, and we'll see how it does in the tournament next weekend... perhaps with a few modifications. With the battle won, Lord Magwe returned to the serenity of his star chamber to reflect on what he had learned. The power of shadows had proved difficult to control, and it had cost him two of his bravest warriors to drive away the interlopers. None the less, as he resumed his meditations, it was still the darkness that called to his spirit...
Looks like a fun game you played there. I'll be playing CW soon and seing how well your list performed, it gives me hope of not getting totally butchered!
Good battle report! One word of advice. Charm on the Jaguar Warrior on the Scar-vet would make it easier to not waste a spell on him. That and the scar-vet would never fail stupid. Nice battle though, glad to see the list performing well!
Nicely done! How do you like those razors? I've never tried them because they seem risky. But that 2 Art dice when being charged sounds very nice. Best of luck to u in future and many wins with the old ones blessing as well Your Friendly Thunder Lizard
Thanks for all the feedback! I know I'm going counter to popular opinion, but I love the razordons so far. They're kind of like a super mobile, weaker version of a hellblaster gun that doesn't blow up when it misfires, and my opponents always seem to groan when I put them on the table so I figure I'm not totally off base. In other developments, I was reading through the big rule book and realized that I shouldn't have been able to flee with the skink chiefs' stegadon, as it is immune to psychology. Granted, if I had know that ahead of time I would have positioned it differently to start with, but getting the chariot to fail it's charge was a significant part of the victory. I called my opponent and we agreed to mark this one down as a draw. Next time I'll use the skirmishers to screen and keep the stega further back.
Yeah, you seemed to have great success with the less traditional units. As far as I can tell, you killed a hellcannon and two units of warriors with your skrox unit? Great show man! I have a soft spot for our fluffy skrox units... skink and kroxigor models are so awesome. And taking the latter is just classy in a lizardmen army.
