Could you get away with using a saurus model as a saurus priest? using the rules for a skink priest?

If we're talking strictly as a stand in then sure just make sure it's okay in your group/ vs your opponent.
Generally speaking though saurus warriors are too big. They have a 25mm base vs 20mm so it's not optimal not to mention that there aren't really any priest like looking saurus..?

Re: Using a saurus as a skink priest?

I had an idea for a conversion and just wondered if it could legit work :)

So in regards to bases, when playing the game it HAS to be on a certain sized base? I have a Ssylth that I've converted to look quite lizardmen like, however because of its size its ended up on a 40mm base. This would be unusable in a game?

really depends on who you play with i guess but this would never fly in a serious tournament.

I've got him into a 25mm base, could I use this given appropriate fluff? (He's not finished yet!)

I'm thinking of him being a Saurus blessed by Sotek in some way (to explain his more snake like lower half!)

Re: Using a saurus as a skink priest?

The main point of contention is that, for the sake of game rules, a skink priest is a skink. This isn't an issue for an army like Ogres, since everyone (minus the hunter) is on a 40mm base. You can fit a character in with any group, no problem.

For us, though, skinks are 20mm, saurus are 25mm, and slann are 50mm. For game purposes, a slann can easily fit into a unit of saurus or temple guard, and a skink priest easily fits into a cohort. If you try to put a skink priest in with saurus, he sits off to the side of the unit. Ditto with a slann into skinks.

If you are intending to participate in any tournament or anything similar, they are not going to allow the skink (now saurus) priest on the 25mm base.

That said, there is nothing wrong with making your army look however you want. What I would do in your position is make a rock pedestal (out of foam or something) that fits on the 20mm base. It can spread out enough going up to fit your model (which looks lovely, by the way). That way your model will easily fit in with skinks, and there will be no issues regarding the priest no matter who you play.

Regarding fluff, I can't think of anyone who would deny you a model because it didn't match the original fluff, or because you have a different bit of fluff. Seriously, my ogre army consists entirely of lawyer ogres. No one cares. They just like the models.

One last thing: Tehenhuan is on a 40mm base (I think. It might be 50mm). If you want to have your saurus priest be a great stand-in for Tehenhuan, feel free to use the larger base. You could also make him your slann stand-in if you put him on a 50mm base. You have to match the base size to the unit that it is filling in for.

That is definitely a gorgeous model, though, so I can see why you like it. Were the arms your own craftwork?

Re: Using a saurus as a skink priest?

Thanks for the feedback LawGnome, I'm quite clueless with the rules all round atm tbh so I'm scared of ruining a good model by making it unusable. This isn't the model I wanted to use for a priest, the other was just an idea I had in mind whilst I was gluing some pieces together.

I did have this guy on a Rocky/Arty piece but it was bigger than 25mm but not quite 40mm. I moved him onto this so I could use him as my main Saurus Scar Vet/Old Blood. I used some Skink and Saurus arms and used some weaponry spare from the bits i had left from other lizards.

I have an idea for some fluff.

My army in particular is going to be a coast/swamp line based army. I want to use a Frog, but was somewhat not happy with the way they are portrayed in the lore I had available to me. I'm currently thinking of ways to get around this as I want my Slaan to be more proactive in current times. I want my leadership to be headed by a frog but for him to have more of a partnership (for the betterment of the old ones) with my saurus.

I wonder could a frogs mission in life; his mission given by the old ones to complete, to trawl the coastlines and jungles of Lustria repelling those who would invade and harm lustria, guiding those who would seek to benefit from the ways of the old ones and looting treasures to be hoarded in preparation for the end times? I'd like to convert some lizard models to have weaponry looted from other races if possible to reflect this.

Is there anything to stop me from making a small time temple city like dwelling, that is based below (reaching down from the surface) the blood swamps where my army is based and resides?

Ps. Here have a Froge. (Its not finished being painted so WIP and the pictures not that good, the drum in his hand has green stuff and glossy goop coming out of it and running down the side, snakes pour from the tub as I wanted to have a sotek like theme with swarms, snake iconography etc.)

Re: Using a saurus as a skink priest?

Also this being said, does that mean I could use say, 3/4 skink models, convert them to look like unique sort of priests, stick them on a themed 50mm base and use them as a "second slaan" 3 or 4 together channeling magic together? I'd like to keep my army limited to just one actual frog model if possible, probably going to buy a new gw one eventually and convert him a fair bit.

Re: Using a saurus as a skink priest?

I was thinking of the Saurus being sickly, and old. Like a crazed old hex lizard, spent too long affected by the chaotic winds of magic and mutated to have magical properties.

Or just making a bearded saurus with a wizard hat ;D ha.

Re: The "Hi I'm Iggle Sorry I Have A Million Questions" Thre

LawGnome did a great job of explaining it, but I'll add a quick thought -

One of the things that sort of upsets folks about GW is their take on bases.

They tell people that you are to use the base the model came with when you play. That sounds fine on the surface, but is creates a lot of issues. What if I have older versions of models that were on different bases? My Marauder giant came on a 40mm, my wood elf dragon came on a 40mm, my Chaos Marauders came on 20mm, my Golgfags's Ogres came on 25mm...and so on. Now all of these units come on different bases. Do I have to re-base them?

Moving past that specific point, the more general point is that bases actually have significant rules impact in the game, from spell ranges to model count in contact in combats, from mixing in characters to units to how many models can cross a bridge.

Base size absolutely matters to the rules of the game...

...but GW does not assign a base size to the models!

Pretty frustrating, no? Especially since they used to have base size in every unit entry in the Warhammer Armies book.

Anyhoo, just realize that your base size means something in the game and try to keep things on the 'right' base (whatever that means).

That's what I gathered from trawling the web man, thanks for the feedback though makes things clearer :)

Re: Using a saurus as a skink priest?

If you intend for this guy to be a scar vet or oldblood on foot, leave him on the 25mm base. If you want him to be a priest, you need to find some way to get him on a 20mm base.

The trick here is to make your rocky/arty piece funnel up and out. That way it can fit on the 20mm skink base, but expands wide enough as you increase the height to allow your snake saurus to fit comfortably. This will cause your model to expand over your nearby models, but it should be easy enough to fit into any skink movement tray.

You don't need a ton of vertical rise on the base, just enough to let the model comfortably overlap any nearby model. It's already tall enough to stand out, so make it tall enough for your purposes, and no more.
