Ok well most people like Terradons or Chameleon Skinks for Warmachine crew hunting, I've been thinking. Isn't the Nike Saurus a better choice ? 4 Terradons are 120 Points. Scar Vet is 118, Light armor, Jaguar Charm, and Sword + Shield. For the purpose of the discussion lets use lore of shadows for the slann. You deploy your Slann with the the Nike 4" infront of him. You both march 8". You cast all your spells keeping back a dice (or 2 depending on slann) to cast steed last. You hammer your opponent with dangerous spells first. His dispel dice exhausted you Cast steed of shadows on the Nike. Then he uses the Jag charm. He is now 48" from his starting area, and possibly embroiled in combat with the enemies war machine crew. Since moving into a enemy with Steed of shadows count's as charging, you might be able to silence a warmachine first turn already. What do you guys think ? Workable or not ? Downsides - your opponent uses a dispel scroll to stop the bound spell or the Cast one. your jag might get shot. On the upside your opponent is down a scroll, making your slann ALOT more effective. Ideas ? I was tinkering with giving him sword of might - make him wound on 2+ and Give tasty minus to enemy saves.
Extra thread deleted. Hmm it doesn't explicitely say you can't, like for example dance macabre for VC says that the same model cannot be moved twice in one phase. Intuitively I would say you cannot make him have two lots of steed in one turn, I'm not sure if GW has clarified that anywhere though.. What is more likely is they work with each other so the opponent may get the chance to dispel the Slann, but that will be the end of his dice and the bound item gets through. A potential 28" charge is still very good and will still get you into combat with warmachines on turn 1 in most cases, as long as you line up not too far away from them. It is definitely more likely to just eat a couple of scrolls though; no general wants to see something in combat with their warmachine on the first turn. If you cannot reach, move him up into cover or next to their lines so nothing can really touch him and send him in second turn.
you could always jump him out of a unit as well and just out of curisoity could you no do the same with chief and cloak of feathers sword of might burning blade will still wreck machine crews plus he is cheaper i don't see why a flying unit can't benifit from steed of shadows, but i could be wrong
Flying units can, as long as it is US1 it can. The cloak of feathers would indeed be a more reliable choice as far as distance goes, however, a skink is a lot softer than a saurus. Matter of preference I guess.
*Mental image of Saurus Scar vet getting literally Catapulted across battlefield* lol - I just thought it would be a nice Trick to draw dice and do double duty as warmachine hunter.
the JSWOD no longer works due to the fact that it can be dispelled easily and im sure a model cannot be effected by a spell twice in a turn, think about it really, you couldnt justufy have bears anger cast on a model twice, same goes for other spells, making it a spell instead of just increased movement sucks
but like i said cloak of feathers and steed of shadows is a potential 40 in. movement or two 20 in. movements on different characters either way good stuff and as far as machine crew hunting a skink chief will probally kill the crew easy enough and even if they don't kill them in the first round they still tie them up so they can't shoot and if they turn a unit around to combat the characters they are putting their line infantry into serious jeopardy this will put you in better starting shape no matter what imo
"GARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!!!!!!!!" I can see it now and I can't stop laughing! As I can't find anything from GW saying it's not so I'd say go for it, but then on the flip side I can't see Steed being used twice on the one model. You can only push a steed so fast after all, if you had two they aren't going to go any faster.
Hmm well the saurus may not be able to have 2 steed of shadows, but as mentioned it looks like the skink with cloak now becomes the equal fastest thing in warhammer, next to TK carrion who can also fly 20" then get magicked another 20 by a priest. Main difference is the TK magic is a bit more likely to work and carrion are a bit tougher than a lone skink chief/priest, but its still fast.
*CLANK!* Empire steam tank crew: "WTF was that!" Saurus Scar vet gets up holding his head. I don't think It should be a issue. I mean the first Steed of shadows is a Bound item, and the second one is cast by the Slann. 2 Different models, 1 spell, 1 bound. I mean does it matter? I mean unless a spell says you can't use it twice - you can use it twice. It would be silly not being able to cast fireball twice at the same unit etc.
but youd cast fireball from different wizards not same model using spell, for example there is no way to cast Bears anger on a model twice in a turn, and bound item or not its still the same spell, check the rule book i believe it has a rule on spell that effect friendly models
I just scoured through the rulebook and indeed there isn't anything saying the same spell can't effect the same model twice... I would be fairly sure that it is just an oversight from GW and no one has really tried it yet so they haven't had the need to say it isn't allowed, I had a bit of a look through some FAQs and couldn't find anything. Really, rules as written, you have to interpret it that multiple steed's can be cast on one target in a turn. You would be pretty annoyed if you couldn't use multiple light healing spells on one target wouldn't you? From different wizards so nothing wrong with it. Nothing anywhere suggests that you can't, in fact both the VC and TK movement spells specifically say you cannot use them on the same target twice in one turn, these (the 6th ed VC book said it too) were out before the 7th ed BRB so have been thought of. The fact that they say they cannot be stacked, but steed of shadows or indeed bear's anger if you had two wizards with the lore of beasts don't say they cannot be stacked... The only FAQ on stacking I could find was on enemy targets, where GW said it was completely allowed to put multiple of the same lasting spell on one target, ie. two flames of the phoenix was the example given, while the example of the rain lord suggested it could be done but two would have no greater benefit than one.
You won't need two slann though, not if your using the bound spell. But having it cast 3 times on the scar-vet would kill!
You don't need 2 Slanns, just the jaguar amulet on the saurus and one other Slann, as long as he is close enough to the saurus... I guess you launch the Slann spell first then when he is away, launch his bound item. And good point Grifthin! I forgot that the 40" is all magic. He can still move 8" as well, which makes him number 1 for the fastest potential thing in the game. Carrion can only go 40". I can't see where you would EVER need to go 48 inches though.. I see it as a backup, if one spell gets stopped the other can still go off so he has a very good chance of going 28" in a turn, making him more reliable. That will get him into contact with most warmachines turn 1 and probably won't even leave him vulnerable and exposed if the spell doesn't work, because your whole line can go 8".
THose damn high elf repeater bolt throwers! You could also use it to attack from the rear or flank in desperate measures during the last few turns I guess. Those extra CR bonuses may come in handy getting rid of a few enemy units close to the edge. You might get a couple more VP with them running from a flank or rear attack. Just line up a block of saurus warriors to attack the front and the scar vet can jump in from behind.
Here is an alternative crew (or bloodthirster) hunter: Saurus Scar-Veteran + Light armour + Charm of the Jaguar Warrior = 115 (+ maybe a shield) Have your Slann (who is using the Lore of the Beasts) cast bears anger on the saurus. With his new statline of S7 A7 T6 you use the charm and kiss goodbye to any unit you like within 28''
i have seen this depate before, and i know ive read somewhere i cannot be done, dont get me wrong i would love to do it as it would be the nastiest suprise going, i will try and find were it say it tonight if im wrong, hell my army will be changing a bit
