The Silent City (army build and paint progress)

OK! so!
hi there!
im a long time player of warhammer but never have i been very vocal or shown my work.
in the last year or so ive decided to get back into it in a big way and ive fallen in love with the lizards!

rather than just have an army ive decided id rather have more of a diorama or something. so me and a friend have decided to embark on a roleplay campaign. we each write our own fictions in relations to our armies which will collide and the outcome of those battles will dictate future events in the role play

the story starts with a simple setting.
there is a small, hidden city in the jungles of lustria. kept tucked away. where very little seams to be afoot. however there is one slann priest in the main temple, hard at work, trying to decipher one of the many tablets left behind by the old ones that has long since been placed under his protection. what is on this tablet is a mystery however from what has been translated, it could well hold the fate of lustria within its mysterious sigils

SO FAR!!! i have a 3000 point army. all built bar one scar vet (because my glue lid got stuck to the glue and i cant get it off .... )

anyway! pictures! heres what we have so far.



so this is the army! it will however grow ever larger as i move forward. very rarely will any major units see battle however unless a truely mighty challenge should arise



2 units of saurus warriors, 1 unit of temple guard with slann priest, 1 unit of cold one riders, a scar veteran aaaand a custom old one who will be a flushed out character later down the line



2 units of skink skirmishers, 1 salamander hunting pack, a custom skink priest and a custom skink chief, again both will be fleshed out later and tetto'eko! the venerated skink astronomer who was spawned in this city and has chosen it has his place of study.



and my painted steggy! with an engine of the gods! finished this piece up today except for basing which is what has led me to post here!

Welcome to the board. Sounds like a good project.

I like your skink kit-bash conversions. Simple and effective. The skinks in that howdah are brilliant! I like that you did different shades on them, and it makes me wish i'd done the same. Also, wow, really good painting on them.

 

Those Skins on the Stegadon look fabulous! Salamander looks great, too, but the picture is so small it's hard to really see. Bigger pictures/close ups, please!

 

thanks you guys! feels great to be so welcomed! and i did the skinks different colours because i have this sort of head cannon that as skinks get older they lose colour. obviously theyre all born slightly different anyway but the older they get the paler they become.

please ignore the paint job -_- it was mostly experimenting. the palanquin is made from a skeggy crest and some very old cold one metal model bits. they idea is that it was carved out of the very little marble they had and ordained with gold. the levitation orbs and disk on the back are basically enchanted by the slann so that he can levitate it himself. while a powerful priest, hes not powerful enough to raise his own palenquin by himself AND summon giant flaming space rocks.
so it looks alittle rickety by design. his wouldnt be as fancy as the slanns but its still a great honor



a little more love for my saurus old blood. he hasnt got a name yet but hes the oldest saurus in THAT city. basically he is the military leader while the slann is busy and what he says goes. despite some who think his time has passed and his mind is slipping. (if anyones got a cool idea for a name im all ears)



really not happy with this paint job... im going to redo it. mostly i dont like the face. but again alot of my paint jobs are experiments.



and since you asked, this is my process for my conversions! on the left are the bits and bobs used to make the priest all ready for gluing. had a lot of fun making this guy
and on the right is the current pile of bits i have ready to be stuck together to make another scar vet saurus champ. hes gonna be a weapons master and literally carry a barrel of weapons on his back so he has ample options for killing baddies. his sort of the polar opposite of the current scar vet under the old bloods command, both think new leadership is required but neither think the other is suited.


so thats all for now!

i dont actually own any paints.. so this will be a slow blog. but hopefully not too slow. im also gonna update it with story stuff aswell if thats ok?

one thing i forgot to mention last time is that the entire point of the city and the duty of its inhabitants is to keep it as secret and low key as possible. hence the "silent city" part

to be honest im not happy with my tett conversion. i think it looks to rickety.

i am however planning on making a mazdamundi so ill be using the spare steg bits and palanquin to make a tett mark 2

so while i wait to buy some paints so that i can move forward, i got bored. and i had a whole bunch of green stuff
so i thought id give the whole sculpting thing a go as ive gotten the hang of conversions

heres the current progress of my custom slann sculpt coz really theres not enough love for the slanns you know? theres the normal one. the forge world one that you cant get for love or money and the old one which they dont make any more (got the old one that my dad painted up when i was little but i dont wanna touch that one for sentimental reasons

i dont really have any sculpting tools. in fact all i got is that knife head to work with
gonna wait till its sets to move on to do the second layer of detail with the green stuffs. cover it in warts and boils and whiskers and so on

so with the sculpt. ive spent as much time as im going to on it at this point and will try and bring more detail out when i paint it.. but its done for now.



ill get it sprayed tomorrow and get to painting it.
i wanted to make him look like one of those frogs that have the baby frogs coming out of its back, which is why his back is all haggard.

anyway! i got my hands on some paints finally! not great ones.. but paints! and i can work with that
so ive been doing some tests and apart from my temple guard i know what ill be painting each unit.

im going with the idea that the saurus warriors are all spawned together in their units so they all have pretty similar colours but each unit can be widely different

for my skink skermishers ive decided that each skink should look different. as theyre all kinda rag tag and it gives me a good chance to experiment.

now this picture is of my old blood conversion. thing is it was painted by my friend while i was hanging out with him earlier today. hes trying to teach me the basics of painting so he was showing me what he could do. not my work but still thought youd like to see it

now that ive actually got some paints ill hopefully get through these a lot quicker. and hopefully my painting will get a lot better -_-

Nice sculpt! He looks great, very wise old toad. Have you done much sculpting before? How long did it take you?

 

thanks dood! never done a sculpt before, so this is a first go. it took 2 days.. a few hours of 2 days. i had to let the base set before i could add the detail stuff. was fun

 

Don't forget that you can carve and file green stuff after it's hard.

 

yeah ive been doing that to give it a bit more detail but ive only got the head ofa craft knife to work with :/

 

I'm liking the buildup of your army so far! The Scar vet you did looks pretty sweet too!

And nice job on the sculpt! I do a lot of work with green stuff and I hate it but I need it for pretty much everything I do.. Not fun stuff to work with but you've done an excellent job!
