So, I swung by my local game store "Z Games" earlier today and I saw something that really made me bust up laughing. These guys were playing a 1500 point game and one of them was using lizardmen. The other was using a rather well balanced army of dark elves. However get this lol The Lizardmen player's army consisted of three units. It was a skink chief on an ancient stegadon, and 2 blocks of FIFTY SAURUS WARRIORS WITH FULL COMMAND! Such a massively plain army lol but damn does it look foreboding.
Yeah lol I didn't stay to see the battle play out but my friend did and apparently the Dark Elves won.
Maybe he wouldn't have gotten flanked if he ran them 16 wide and 3 deep alll 3 untis with an inch in between them would have taken up around 36 inches of realestate. and if they where deplowing on he 4' side of the table thaat only leaves around 1' of table left.
Ain't no flanking getting done there it isn't! I would totally do that sometime if I just had 60 more Saurus warriors. Cheers!
Only problem with running them that wide is imagine the amount of multiple charges going into them! :O Saurus are tough and would hit back hard with any survivors in base contact, it would actually be an interesting fight. But overall, yeah impressive looking but unweildy. A Dark Elf player could use their speed and just keep running around the unit shooting them.
Only if both are temple guard, and there is a Slann in each With precisely 81 skinks (25% of 2250) of course.
I'm wondering if huge units might become effective. 50 could go 10 wide for the horde bonus attacks and still have 5 ranks. Later in game, or based on the opponent or terrain, the frontage could be narrowed for the sake of having more ranks than your opponent and depriving them of their stubborn status.
I wouldn't mind if they did, would make it rather hard to miss with a salamander shooting at a block of 50
Yea 5 ranks of 10 would allow spear Saurus to fight in 4 ranks. Which would dish out about 50 attacks to the front if the entire front row was in contact, 51 if there was a champion.
Imagine 50 High Elf Sea Guard... You charge them. They stand and shoot 35 shots. They fight at ASF I5 so probably have 51 attacks with rerolls to hit.
Its going to be insanity! I believe in this new edition victory will lie in giant regiments. High Elves are going to be ridiculous. Well atleast Lizardmen have some good solid infantry.
Cast the hex from the heavens lore on them and they won't seem as scary. Making them reroll all 6's to hit, to wound, and for their armor saves will mean they will have a lot of trouble doing much of anything effective. All the attacks in the world don't seem all that great when you are wounding saurus on 5+ but reroll all 6's! I think hexes will be the way to deal with massive units... that and salamanders of course. Cast blizzard and they suddenly are at -1 to hit. Heavens really has a lot of versitility. Maybe running a unit of 2 salamanders will be a good idea now, so you can cast portent on them and reroll all those 1 to wounds on huge units.
