So I have a tournament comming up and I am going to be taking the lizards to their first tournie! It is a 2000 point uncomped event. The focus of my list is magic, avoidance, and points denial... Lord Slann: 485 (Focus of mystery, focused rumination, becalming cogitation, higher state of consciousness) Heores Skink priest: 435 (lvl 2, EotG, plaque of Tepok, war drums) Skink priest: 415 (lvl 2, EotG, dispel scroll) Scar vet: 124 (LA, shield, GW, jaguar charm) Core: x12 saurus warriors: 150 (spears, musician) x10 skinks: 70 x10 skinks: 70 Special: x3 terradons: 90 x3 terradons: 90 x5 chameleon skinks: 60 Total: 1989 So with a dominant magic phase and a good magic defense I plan on blasting away at the enemy. I will play defensively and let my opponent try and get to me while I march black/harass with all my skinky goodness. Giving away no banners and being very mobile, I should be able to grab table quarters easily and win some easy VPs. My opponent will have few juicy targets to shoot at with the main attractions being the 2 steggies. With the ward save being pumped every turn and with careful use of terrain I hope to keep these high point monsters alive and leave my opponent no choice but to get bogged down in all of my under 100 point units. I feel that this list is very versatile and will do good in a tournament environment. What are your thoughts???
Personally I worry that your anvil might be a little small. Beyond the 12 Saurus, which is again, in my inexperienced opinion, a pretty small block of saurus, what do you have to hold the enemy up? Are you doing 2 files of 6 ranks or 3 files of 4 ranks.. if it's the latter you aren't getting a rank bonus. If it's 6x2 you aren't very deep that's for sure.. I'd probably try to get at least 15 saurus into the block so you can do 5x3 2 eotg is awesome, and your mileage may differ but I'm not a fan of holding up the enemy with a hero unit worth 400+ points. I would probably try to rework the list a little bit to get more tough. I'd consider going with just focus of mystery and rumination on the slann, saving 100 points by dropping the other two focii, and adding something like Cupped Hands of the Old Ones and a power stone or something like that. TG work really well as an anvil with a slann as well. If you can fit some of them into the list, it'll offset not having higher state. TG get both Stubborn and Immune to Psychology and they are already Cold Blooded 8. Adding the Slann, with leadership 9 and you probably aren't breaking anytime soon. If you choose to add a BSB, you could chose Sun Standard of Chotec that would give you a further ward save for the whole unit against ranged attacks and you have something you march down the middle of the table. That's my opinion though.. a lot of theoryhammer admittedly, but from all I've learned so far about WFB in general, I think you need something tougher/cheaper to sit in the middle.
Ya, I admittingly don't have a very solid anvil (I will be running the saurus 6x2) but I am not sure one is needed. If something is fast enough to get to me by turn 2 or 3, it will be small enough for me to be able to blast with magic; if a unit if big enough for me to have to worry about prolonged combat that needs a solid anvil, it will be slow enough for me to march block and throw skinks in front of it to the point where they won't reach my main line and if they do I will surely have a steg on their flank in no time. As for the temple guard, they are a pretty big point sink and would give my opponent a definite target for shooting and magic and this would debunk the purpose of my whole list.
Good luck blasting 3x6 Fleshhounds + a Bloodthirster crashing into you by round 2, or a ghould kin 4x flying vamp list that charges you in turn 1, so don't rely too heavily on magic, you might roll crap spells with the priests and then you have problems. You have like a gazillion DDs and cogitation, I don't think a scroll is needed. In fact I dont even think cogitation is needed when you have 8 DDs. A unit of 12 spear saurii are awesome but imo you need a second unit for redundancy. The biggest problem I have with this lsit is that almost all your points are tied up in 3 units, if you face anything that can handle those three units you are gonna have a hard time pulling off a win. The list isnt really "pts denial" as anything that can take out stegs or the toad will turn them into 1300 free VPs. They have to roll on their on LD if they are using the Stubborn rule.
You are right.. my bad. I agree with erians on this one though.. big big characters, and not much else.. I do like the eotg but at this point value I'd probably ditch one to give myself a little more core punch. With the points saved I'd either invest in TG or bumping up the saurus, terradons and chameleons by a model or two each and see about adding more skirmishers. With anything left over you could make a cohort of skinks for march blocking.
Well I am getting the feeling that this list is not well liked, so I have taken some of your suggestions adn formulated a new list. I wanted to run 2 engines, and after adding those and some TG I was really squeezed for points so I don't know if my units are beefy or upgraded enough. If people have better suggestions than a second engine for this list, please do tell.
