Hey everyone, I am brand new to this forum but I have a question that I hope has not yet been raised. My friends and I are planning to try out the new Storm of Magic and I might be in trouble...If I field a Slann who I want to put in the Arcane Fulcrum, he cannot leave the Temple Guard right? Also, during the deployment, he is forced to join the TG right, meaning that he cannot begin in the Fulcrum. Is there any way around this other than having 2 Slann and only a single TG unit?
I have not had a chance to read the SOM book, but I think there is some type of rule that would allow the TG to stay at the base of the fulcrum. Again, I do not know for sure, I think I remember it being mentioned in one of the GW press releases or something. Hell, it could be a rumor that I read somewhere as well.
I was about to start the same thread. We played last night, we agreed that a slann could capture a fulcrum as required (we were a little vague on what would happen if he fell off and whether the temple guard could abandon the fulcrum). We were also shocked that GW didn't think of this VERY common scenario! For reference the other question we had were related to things like cupped hands and soul of stone on arcane miscasts.
I just finsihed ready the expansion book and it is nice and has some nice spells for Lores of Life and Heavans...as well as the great spell for Slann priests... TG IMO are very point heavy...run a few skink priests and a slann then use the rest on MORE saurus warriors blocks... just my opinion...then again I am not that good at playing yet LOL. I just build and convert stuff.
I doubt GW even considered this scenario. Just rushed the book out, probably wrote it all the day before it was due to go to press, copy+paste a few pictures, with no real deep thought given to rules complications. There's no rule in SoM to cover this eventuality and it is not even acknowledged that the Slann, the most iconic and proficient magic users in storm of magic, who are particularly renowned for being accompanied by their bodyguards at nearly all times, would not be able to use the fulcrums if deployed with their bodyguard (which they must be if TG are taken).
Slightly off topic but my main reasons for taking them are: I tend to run a TG unit plus a larger saurus one for several reasons: - TG are immune to psychology when with a slann - A slann caught alone can be caught and broken and run down (he can still lose a combat even if he can't be hurt!) - TG have an extra WS point (not that important IMHO) and if you can chose between shields/Hand weapon for 3+ AS + parry or +1S and 4+AS Throw in some life/light spells and they've vicious!
Again off topic but thought I would point out TG cannot choose to use Hand Weapon and Shield in CC they have to use Halberds. They do get shields vs. shooting but according to 8th ed. rules they have to use Halberds. (Page 89 main rule book). Sucks because there are times I would much rather use HW & S on both my TG and my Spear units.
