Hi there! I will probably play a few warband games (perhaps even a tournament) with my friends and I wonder if you experienced lizardmen players have any information that will come in handy. I'm not sure what the points will be, (probably 100 - 200 pts.) but I'm going to play against Dwarves and Night goblins.
Warbands are interesting because of how small the games are. A simple unit like a salamander can be a devastating secret weapon in a 200-500pt game. And it will certainly make the night goblins flee... And I'd definately use a skink based list, I don't think saurus really belong in battles that small. Skirmishers can run circles around the enemy and pepper them with poison darts, slowly lowering their ranks. A Salamander can wreak some havoc and is fairly inexpensive points wise. And an opponent probably wouldn't know what to do if you had 3 terradon riders. You'd be able to swoop past his lightly armored things and drop rocks, and get an easy charge off on something he's planning on being a secret weapon. If its a cannon or something you'll be able to handle it with relative ease. You could probably save points and just use a skink chief on terradon, they are pretty tough for the point cost in a game that small. Against the night goblins make sure to set off any fanatics he may have, you just need to get close enough with one unit willing to take the hits. Then shoot it down with blowpipes.... Anyway, Good Luck...
I actually haven't gone very far in the warhammer gaming. ^^' My knowledge of the game is enough to use infantry and shooting with a little improvisation. Same is for my friends. However the few times I have played it went pretty smoothly. I tried my skinks against some dwarves and they got annhilated before they could reach me. So I should not use any saurus? I won't use ranked skinks since I don't like javelins. My Night Goblin playing friend does not own any fanatics but thanks for the tips.
That's fine, You'll get better at playing, and this forum is pretty helpful. Though warbands games go a little different then a normal game, so I'd actually suggest you do 1,000 points or 1,500 points first, and get used to the basics when you have more troops to move around, get killed, etc. Then dropping down to 500pts or 300pts or doing an escalation league type thing is alot more fun, and really puts the two players skills to the test. The matches become very competitive and its all about the movement and making smart tatical choices. At 200pts I really don't think you need any saurus, or any rank and file skinks. They are going to be too small/slow to be able to really do anything, and any banners and such is pratically free VP's. Your list will tactically be very similar to hit and run. You'll shoot, avoid charges, flee from charges, shoot more, maybe charge with terradon, more shooting, breath weapons, more shooting, lol. Harass the enemy and try to loose as few guys as possible, luckily they are skinks, so if you do loose any skirmishers they are pretty inexpensive. If your not going to see any surprise fanatics then your lucky, they could hurt in a warbands size game. Goblins are pretty cheap so your shooting will take a while a whittle them down, the salamander would really help since a single wound every shot causes a panic test. And against dwarfs they are probably going to try to get an organ gun or something like that to give them an advantage. They will probably castle up around it, in which case the chief on terradon would make short work of it. Just make sure if its a cannon to charge from 10 inches away not 20, that way it doesn't get its grape shot stand and shoot. If the dwarf list is more combat oriented it'll be even easier to kill as you already stated, they are sooo slow, just run around them and shoot constantly. Get ahead in points and hold em until the end of turn 6. Good Luck...
Thank you! I will try some of this out tomorrow. Oh, and can heroes join skirmisher units? I'm planning to buy a skink chief with a blowpipe u see.
A skink chief on foot can indeed join a unit of skink skirmishers... Though I don't suggest giving him a blowpipe, If your gunna put him with skirmishers you should try to make sure you can get Staff of the Lost Sun. That way you at least get 3 str 5 shots, that will be hitting on 4+ at long range, and 3+ at close range, plus they count as magical. Good Luck...
You should try to talk everyone up to at least 300pts. Then you can field; Skink Chief (Goes alone) - Light Armor - Shield - Spear - Terradon 10 Skink Skirmishers 8 Skink Skirmishers Salamander - Extra Handler Total: 299pts Or you can do this; Skink Chief (Goes with unit of 8 skirmishers) - Light Armor - Shield - Staff of the Lost Sun 10 Skink Skirmishers 8 Skink Skirmishers Salamander - Extra Handler Total: 300pts Of course I just made those up really fast, you obviously can do whatever you want.
Eh you can just talk everyone up to 350 pts and run an engine of the gods and piss everyone off. Just kidding I agree 100% with SlannofItza, being an experienced small point game player what he said is absolutely the best way to do it.
There is probably not going to be any more games for now... My "friend" decided to quit warhemmer and the "club" we had is probably going to disappear since people do whatever he does. I will continue with warhammer and perhaps join a club nearby so that I can learn there.
