Just general pointers and tips into making an all around efficient all-comers list.
An example of a usual lizardmen all-comers list would be awesome.

I'm asking because due to the (relative) new book things might've changed. I know that salamanders were considered must-haves in the 7th edition army book, but do that still stand?

At it's heart, WFB is a very complicated game of Rock, Scissors, Paper. Certain units have good matchups against other units, and bad match-ups against yet other units. Knowing what your best match-ups are, and maneuvering so that you get them, is really important to winning games.

Given this, there are two main approaches to making an "all comers" list: either try to achieve an equal balance of Rock, Scissors, and Paper, or...just fill your list up with a lot of one, and hope your opponent doesn't have the right counter. The general philosophy behind the second strategy is, "if brute force isn't working, you probably aren't using enough."

    Common lizardmen all-comer lists include:

    - Monster Mash ("Bring lots of Rock!!")
    - Skink Clouds ("Bring lots of Paper!!")
    - Character bus ("Bring lots of Scissors!!")
    - Infantry blocks & support ("balanced")

There's no one unit that is a must-have across all four strategies, but there are key units to each strategy, which are hopefully self-evident. For example, any Skink Cloud worthy of the name needs some Skinks. :)
