Well as the title states I wonder what units I should get to start up a manageable force around 800-1000 points.

I already have 16 saurus and I have the possibility to buy cold one riders and more saurus at half the price in my local store. The rest I would probably try to find at ebay or simply buy from games-workshop.

I think now before I have the book Im gonna include a horde of saurus, a block of skink skirmishers, terradon riders and a salamander led by a scar-veteran and a skink priest.

Is that gonna work or not? What should I get instead for the army to work better?

Please take into account that I have no experiance at all playing lizardmen when you answer.

    Thankfull for answers! :D

Well, you picked a great time to start Lizardmen. We should (hopefully) have a new rulebook (and models) in about one month. That said, if you can get a discount on Saurus warriors, I would probably take it. However, I would also ask your local store if they are discounting it due to new stock coming in. If there will be new Saurus sculpts, you may want to wait just a while longer. The same goes for the cold one cavalry. Right now, cold ones are kinda crappy, hopefully, they will change the rules to make them much better.

You cannot go wrong with picking up Temple Guard either. Especially if you plan on using a slann. I would wait on the terradons as there is a real possibility that there will be new sculps of those when the new stuff comes out.

    Hope this helps.

    It does help thank you!

I have read about the rumors and i might wait a while with picking up the army book in case there is going to be a new one.

My hopes are up that there will be new cold one models more looking like the dark elves because the ones lizardmen have now look kinda weird in my opinion.. But the saurus models look okay i think so i might pick them up at a disscount and use them even if there is new ones coming.

My store is not selling out the old stuff for new stuff its at a 50% disscount as they are not going to sell warhammer any longer! :depressed:

That stinks about your store not selling Warhammer anymore. I'd get on the purchases regardless of new sculps or not. Can't beat 50% New in Box.

That said, there will definitely be a enw army book, so wait on purchasing that.

Saurus units are really your brick and mortar for your army, so i'd definitely go in for another unit.
I'd reiterate the Temple Guard comment too: while we lack somewhat in 'elite' infantry the Temple Guard make a nice slashy unit of hyper-saurs that hold their own pretty well.

Cold One cavalry are effective but horribly expensive (I restrict mine to a unit of five at the momen, using them for war machine/character hunting). Hopefully this will be changing with the next rulebook!

I can't say much about Salamander's: I have two but I'm cursed with continually rolling Misfires. My last battle I rolled 3/4 misfires the first turn. After that they quickly died under a sustained hail of High Elf arrows :(

Well 2 battalion boxes are generally the way to start, especially if a new book gets released and the COC get better and you cannot wait a month.

A stegadon! You can make a baby or an ancient, plus you can put the priest it comes with on foot if you like.
