I've put this topic up to try and find out which lord can pile up more of the enemies corpses, A Slann or An OldBlood + Carnosaur This is assuming that the two have roughly the same points in wargear also. I also want to know which one is going to be more effective in any number of given battles, so as to best decide which of these 2 lords i should take. (ie Which one is going to be able to perform best against a large range of enemies) Thanks
This topic comes up a lot. here is the latest one. Essentially, it really is a matter of personal opinion. What would you prefer; a combat based army or a magic based army? Both are quite versatile and can lead a variety of lists successfully, both can also be equipped in many different ways for many different uses. You simply cannot say which is 'better', try both and see which works best for you and which you like more.
I think the general consensus is that a Slann is the "better" choice, but, like Strewart said, it's a matter of personal opinion. A Slann benefits a very static, infantry based army with his high Leadership bonus, massive boosts to Temple Guard resilience and excellent magic. The Carnosaur, on the other hand, is good in a faster, more offensive list because of his speed and hitting power in Close Combat. So, it's really a toss-up.
Or you can take the best of both worlds, and run an offensive Slann list, where the Temple Guard are your slowest unit, but have the always march drum and the Slann takes Lore of Shadow. The Slann allows for a huge degree of flexibility, as with the Focus of Mystery he can have all six spells of any of the 8 lores. This means you can pick from 48 special "abilities" and really pick the most effective lore for each game. This versatility makes him very good in tournaments, where you never know what you'll face. The Oldblood is less expensive points-wise, and can take Blade of Realities for instant-kill goodness. You'll want to build your list to be able to close the gap quick, but don't forget to pack some saurus as well. Lots of skink, chameleon, and terradon support units will help you set up favorable combats.
Thanks for all the responses Im still unsure of what i'll take to fight it out with, heck im unsure of alot! I think im swinging towards the slann more, all that magical fury.... Are there any articles about the different special characters? I've read a few scattered throughout the forums and i wondered if it was ever worth taking them, just wondering if you guys could point me in the right way? Thanks again!
If you want a Slann, they are powerful enough as it is. I would say a 670ish point Slann and a unit of temple guard is probably better than 620 point Mazmundi. I tend to favor quantity over quality though. Slann are awesome. Carnosaurs are awesome. Either way you've got something that will scare the crap out of your enemies because that's how we do it here in Lustria.
If you look at the fluff and points of a slann they are pretty much a special character anyway. If you are looking at specials Oxytal and the temple guard one (don't have my book handy, sorry) are good for most armies although kinda expensive.
Yeah Chakax is awesome, but his points cost is rather well...high...ive been told that hes not generally worth it unless higher point games. However i also love Gor-Rok, that dude seems seriously cool, wish there was a model for him!
Me too. I use Gor-Rok every once in a while, especially against my friend's Ogres. He's hard as nails to kill, but I wish he had a slightly higher armor save, although the Resilient rule is pretty good at ensuring that he doesn't take damage.
i actually maid my own model for gor rok by using a saurus body a temple guard shield and head and some shoulder pads oh and spikes and an axe if u look at the pic of gorok in the book you can make the exact same things with those items
IMO Slann are generally better, but if the enemys got a particularly nasty hero or lord an oldblood with a carnos good for squashing them into teh floor. Its nice to leave them enemy(s) with no characters at all
