I'm thinking rarely. Saurus Warriors have such wide bases that a frontage of 10 would be wasteful in most cases. Skinks are pretty weak for major combat. Kroxigors are pricey for fieilding units of 18 or more.

What say the rest of you guys?

Well, in a large battle a horde of Saurus would be fine as the battlefield will be larger and have more space (in most cases) and as for skinks, the most common horde I have seen is a Skrox unit.. You can go four Krox wide or three and then put two files of skinks on both flanks of the unit to make it ten wide.. Its not as pricey as a Saurus horde but it also lacks the staying power.. As you said, you will see hordes in our army pretty rarely ;)

Rarely? really? I love running saurus hordes. 30-40 Saurus 10-wide is fun to watch (i've done up to 60 just to try it). It's expensive for a single unit though, and it can be difficult to get it across the battlefield and into base-to-base contact.

I agree, pretty much never. They are 250mm across, if you are fighting a horde on 20mm bases you will just get the whole unit into contact going corner to corner. Anything smaller and you are wasting attacks. And people will not want an entire horde of saurus hitting their units, so they will reform to be thinner, or avoid your unit, or shoot your unit. Saurus are a bit too slow to force their way into combat.

I think 6 wide is good for them. And yes, skinks in a horde... Well, could work but they're probably not even worth taking in units that big.

I actually played 1500 against tomb kings a while ago with a horde of 50 Saurus, an oldblood in with them, a salamander and a bunch of skinks.

I sat back and took the shooting with barely a scratch, he got itchy ( as he tends to) and came at me. I managed to get the charge and literally overran into his entire army 1 unit at a time

I think they can work well, but you've gotta pick your opponent.

The thing overlooked in this topic is that Hordes are an excellent points denial tactic. I always bring a horde of 32 skinks + 4 Kroxigar into battle and, at 1500 point games, I stick a slann on the side of them with life. Toughness 6 skinks with 4+ regen plus wounds bein regenerated on the kroxigar for lore aspect? Priceless.

I hereby refuse to play poker with you. Ever.

What about a horde o' skinks with some krox behind them?

thank you slaantastic. someone else who recognizes the beauty that is a big horde. big hordes might not be the most effective for maximizing your attacks in combat. they might be unwieldy and hard to move about. but they just...dont...die :) (used correctly of course).

60 saurus, command and spears for 3k, thats my benchmark. ive lost the unit 1 time since 8th came out and that was due mainly to not knowing the steadfast reform rule. thats 750 pts (plus a slann of varying points cost) that i just dont have to worry about losing.

people know i bring it, its common knowledge, its just so very hard to kill. and with the slann in the front with becalming cog, those #6 spells are just that much harder to get off.

although i havent even played a game yet (stiil building my army) when I get a big enough army I'm going to put about 40 saurus w/ spears up against knights of the realm but im far from giving any good advice

I use a unit of 25 ranked up 5 wide against those knights, if you survive the charge (with the ranks you should stick about) you will destroy them :)

I've always used 40-50 Saurus in horde formation since 8th edition. Most times they do great, others a little worse. I haven't tried not putting them in horde so maybe I will try that someday. You can't forget (as others have mentioned) that these guys will take forever to kill unless you do something really dumb with them (get charged by multiple units, on the flanks, etc.). This is just my opinion though and based mainly on play experience.
