Hey guys Ive been playing alot of warhammer 40k recentley, and my fantasy has fell by the side. Before i left i gathered a lizardman army, something like: Slann mage priest 2 skink priests 1 chakax eternity warrior 1 battillion another box of saurus another box of skinks 1 stegadon 1 razordon hunting pack And i amassed a similar sized army of warriors of chaos Now reading back through the warriors rulebook they seem to be at a huge advantage. The normal chaos warriors are amazingly powerful ( i know alot of points but still ).... they seem to be more of a combat army aswell...but stronger? the tzeentch magic is also incredible... infernal gateway is too immense. Im a big magic fan so the slann is a big attraction for me, but what i want to know is, what would sway me more to the lizardmen more then chaos?. I like the models equally so its a real tough call for me Any helpfull advice or information which is pro lizardmen??
lizardmen are mean lizards! and u have a nice assortiment of tiny skinks to great and might stegadons and carnosaurs, u have cheap units to toy the enemy around, get them where u want them to be. Slann is perhaps te most incredible caster in the game, with the option to choose any lore he wishes, he will furfill your greater desires. all i can say is, if u want to know what is more op your alley, play a battle of two with both armies?
Both armies are very powerful if you run a well thought out list and is a somewhat competent general, so don't let the cheese-factor decide what you play. Just ask yourself what play style you like. A lizardmen army can be compete in all phases: they are masters of magic, they can have extremely potent shooting phases, they have strong elite infantry with amazing LD and powerful combat monsters to support them, they have cav that are kinda fast and a bunch of very mobile skirmishers as well as cheap flyers. All in all they are very versatile and its hard to get tired of them, as you can design an army to fit whatever play style you like. Warriors of Chaos are more specialized and one-dimensional, but they generally stronger in their areas. They can't really be very mobile as they rely on their elite infantry but they have ways of dominating the movement phase with cheap fast cav, flying heroes and cheap skirmishing flyers. Their magic is good but Gateway is pretty overrated as people mostly fixate on how good a Str 11-12 gateway is but it happens pretty damn rarely (if my math is correct is should be 1/9 chance to delete a unit, so maybe once every 3-4 games). They only have 1 shooting piece so their shooting phase will be weak or non-existent. They do combat VERY well tho, so if you truly only care about grinding stuff down then this is the army for you.
Well i think ill stick with my lizardmen. After a long decisive process i just prefer the diversity of lizardmen and the models and feel in general. Plus after reading the lizardmen rulebook its safe to say that they have some of the best mages.... ever!. you say they have a pretty potent shooting phase though... all i can see is skinks an chameleon skins?. i know they're poisoned but very short range...
The one thing chaos has over lizardmen is their core infantry is alot more customizable than saurus. Marks and weapon choices etc. And they have a fantastic war machine, the hell cannon. The first time I saw it and didn't know what it was I just rushed some skinks up to it and after killing the crew found out it was a monster and it charged and destroyed my skinks amoung other things.
You can easily get 100-150+ poison shots per turn, which is about the same as any gunline, and it comes at a low price. My current list has 120 poison shots per turn and I don't even use cammos because of comp (48 skirmishers + 24 cohorts). You also have cammos as you mentioned, Salamanders which are absolutely devastating against infantry, razordons, terradons drop rock attack, and stegadons howdah weapons. It all adds up to a pretty spectacular shooting face. The range of Skinks and cammo skinks isn't really that bad at all. 12" might look short but as skirmishers they can marsh and shoot, which makes skinks effective range 24" for single shot and 18" for double shot while cammos has an effective range of 24" for double shot, so they really have very similar range to any other Ballistic Skill based shooting.
Thanks for the advice guys!, really appreciate it I only know now that god damn salamanders are probably better then razordons! -.- i know what you mean about marks and weapon choices for chaos warriors, but then your making them into a point sink in my opinion, yeh they're gonna hit you hard, (khorn warriors with 2 hand weps ) but they wont have many. I would have thought if you had enough skinks you could easily kill the hell cannon. 100 - 120 shots.... thers gonna be some wounds there.... The only problem i can see now with the lizardmen is their weakness to Shadow magic is it? purple sun and that... as far as i can read that doesnt have a range on it... so my friend who plays dark elves, his idea is to just get a cheapish which and blow her brains out on a miscast table, but then im rolling for 1's to keep my 350pt slann and unit of temple guard alive. theres another similar spell at a range of 24, so i would have used Becalming Cogitation and removed any 6's.... but with purple sun the chances are i wouldnt be able to reach him, same goes for cracks call in skaven. Any way to avoid such a mishap?
lore of light is for me the best choice, it gives your saurus warrior IN 10 totally destroying our weakest point and trust me, the sight of 20tg with a slann comming to wards you with ws 10 and IN 10 , they will feaaar!
But that means you have to have that spell on most of your army to avoid being totally destroyed by that spell?.... I know that would negate the effects but its not enough to turn aside the purple sun
HaHa, I see your 'over 50 skinks' and raise you 175 skinks! (I really like skinks) Chameleons are the coolest and best reason to choose lizardmen though.
Skinks really were the biggest draw (and continue to be!) for me. Stegadons are also awesome.. and Slann are bloated toads that OWN the magic phase! Its always tough to bring myself to try different Slann builds though, because the copy paste ones are just so good.
