AoS Why would you choose core units over special?

    Templeguards > saurus warriors
    Chosen > Warrior of Chaos
    Grave/tomb guards > skellies
Any former special models > any former core models. For the most part. Previously the balance was usually that they were more expensive and you HAD to spend 25% on core, now there's no such requirement. Why would I ever want a unit of SW vs guards? I can't remember their exact rules, but I believe Saurus Warriors only benefit from being in a unit of 20 and 30 models. Guards have an additional melee attack and better To Hit roll and Rend If I'm not mistalening. SW get buffs from being in s bigger unit.. Yay?

    Did I miss something?

The Saurus host at the end of the list, would be a reason. I have not played yet so I am not exactly sure how much of a benefit the additional rules would be, but it requires a minimum of 30 saurus.

^ They beat me to it. I was just finishing my post - bleh!

I see where you're coming from, otherwise. The roles still appear slightly different in the context of battalion & summon.

Yes...only the most important question... Why would you choose AoS over 8th edition Warhammer proper? ;)

I might be wrong, but isn't one of the benefit that all saurus including templeguards gain an extra attacks. The host much a benefit for SW as for the guards as far as I know. I could be wrong though.

I just checked again and saurus warriors have:
4+ to hit, 3+ to wound and 5+ save. At 20 models they gain +1 To Hit and 30 they gain +1 attack.

    Guards have:
3+ to hit, 3+ to wound, 4+ save, Rend and an additional attack.
They can gain more bravery as a special rule.

The host benefit all units in the host so both gains an additional attack and auto pass battle shock I think.

So if you go with 30 saurus warriors the difference is the save, Rend and bravery special rule guards have.

    That's super dumb.

Thats what I meant, sorry. Unless the special rules gained as part of the host warrant 3 units of SW, then I am not sure why you would not take TG. Well, lack of models maybe.

Uh I'm sorry I derped a bit. Yes the host would be a logical solution although I'd still rather have more vanilla templeguards than host saurus warriors tbh.

With a host you'll still want 20 models to gain the +1 To Hit benefit. The main issue is to actually have that amount of models.

They're worth it in the battalion, the Saurus Host. I wouldn't take them as an individual warscroll, though.

This assumes that you and your opponent agreed to bring x battalions, x warscrolls, x wounds per unit max, x wounds per army max. They're great in that regard.

No worries. And not blowing hot air and puffing up, but I have 60 or so saurus.

on the other hand, vanilla skinks have their uses. Chamos are better, but still...

The Saurus Host is brutal.. looking at these books, not much can stand up to it head-to-head.

I think most melee would go a little something like this.

    Talk about Powerful Jaws!

Also, add in a Bsb, maybe summon some in, and all of a sudden you have some severe damage potential.

Plus the Saurus Host gives you immunity to Battleshock. That's pretty serious. Makes your army Unbreakable, to put it in 8ed terms.

It's good to see that the tabletop version finally matches the fearsome warriors of our fluff. :p
