I'm a old 40k player and I'm just starting to get into Warhammer.  I don't have the rulebook yet but I got the army book to see if I would like Lizardmen, and I love them.  I've been reading blog upon blog and watching battle reports to get a feel for how they work, but I need advice from you seasoned players out there about what to collect before I go berserk at my hobby table to get them all ready for battle. I've already purchased an army on sprues, so I already own the models in the list below (minus the Slann).

I'm not looking for anyone to break forum rules by giving me information that I should get myself. I'll get the rulebook soon, so please tell me which models you think I should get next and what I should change about the current list.

If you don't feel like looking over the whole thing, here are some quick questions I have...
    1. What should I give the Slann?
    2. Is it a bad idea to put the SVs on mounts?
    3. Should the SW be in 5x5 formations or 6x4?
    4. What upgrades should I give my units?
    5. How should I deal with war machines?

Your wisdom will contribute to the destruction of Chaos!

    quick notes would be:
If a slann is in temple guard, dont bother with extra protection, that's what they are for, he has 5 wounds and 4+ ward.
I like: Slann - BSB, Mystery, Rumination, Cogitation, Cupped Hands

scar vets on mounts are tough, check out the scar vet thread, it has some really nice builds!
I prefer using them in 6x4 for the attacks but you can benefit from steadfast if your outranking your opponent, very useful. whichever works best for you!

Generally, full command is enough, otherwise you waste points better used elsewhere.
Warmachines, invest in chameleon skinks or terradons. thats the best way.

    on the list:
units of 10skinks are better, they are throwaway units, no need to be 12.
as mentioned no need for extra defense on slann
Ancient stegs are better if you can get the points in.
for me Cold one cavalry are either okay, or bad. but i know some players who swear by them... so each to there own.

    hope this helps

You good sir, need some salamanders!!! Some of the best units in our army!

A S3 flaming template fired artillery dice away, causing panic if 1 casualty is taken is amazing, the smaller harassing units can be destroyed by them, and cheap hordes of Tomb Kings or Night Goblins melt at the sight of them.

As for your questions, Slanns should always have Cupped Hands, on a 2+ you can transfer a miscast on to an enemy wizard, its insane! Also Becalming Cogitation is my favorite discipline as it brings an edge to defensive magic.

Scar vets on Cold ones are great, +2 armour from thick hides and an extra S4 attack, plus it then gives you the option of jumping them out of units to go and attack something else if you can.

Chameleon skinks are your warmachine hunters, dance around enemies and shoot at the big nasties, Poison shots mean you can take a Necrosphinx with T8 out in 1 or 2 shooting phases.

Hope this helps and welcome to the board!

    You guys are so helpful!!

Would you run Chameleon Skinks in two units of 5?

How many Salamanders does it take to be reliable? Two units of two?

I always run my chameleons in at least 2 units of 5 (even if the target is the same for both), that way, your oppenent has to chose a target. I also run at least 2 units of 2 salamanders when I take them. This way, you get the benefit of 6 handlers shared between them. Since the handlers are attached to the unit, they stay when you lose one sally. No need to get an extra snack as there are plenty to go around when the sally gets hungry (and it will).

Agreed Arli, except on the salamanders, but only due to lack of models XD

    Thanks again! :)

Should I even bother upgrading a SW to a champion if a SV is riding with the unit?

What's the best way to upgrade my unit of TG? Keep them as is or buff them up with FC and a magic banner of some kind?

New to Lizards myself, but I think the general consensus is that the Champion SW is only need if you plan to have a hero unit in the SW unit so he can accept challenges instead of your hero.
