AoS Second Edition

If he doesn't play AoS, what does he need the SCE for?

Absolutely. I'm buying the whole lot from Alchemists Workshop... Going to be a pretty big order, starter box, GHB18, magic expansion, the two other nighthaunt boxes available that day.... At least.

I had to look Alchemists Workshop up (initially I got a theatre company ).

Never heard of these guys, do they only ship in the UK? Everything was in pounds...

I normally get good prices from over at the War Store.

I feel the pain your wallet is in right now. Call me a tightwad but I could never spend that much money at once - the sheer impact of losing so much money would overwhelm me!

Although at least you'll get some money back if you intend to sell the Stormcast...:p

Perhaps to @NIGHTBRINGER as plastic to melt down for him to cast new Tomb King models? Or perhaps @Warden to give him a new Hippogriff model for his Bretonnians (He'd need to find a mounted knight model to go with it mind)? ;)

I have looked at the stormcast beasties before... some of them could potentially work for a Bretonnian, I would just have to scrape off all the lightning bolts. But then again I really wish I had picked up one of the High Elf plastic griffins from the old starter box, that one would have made a great hippogryph-jaguar combo to go with my Lustrian themed knights!

Still waiting on GW to put Long Drong's Slayer Pirates on the "for a limited time only" part of the site :shifty:

Makes sense, I will not be able to make use of their services but I hope our members who live in these countries can find some good bargains!

I've found out about them recently, and buying from them is an absolute steal!

Huge Balewind Vortex Nerf. RIP Kroaknado.

Kroaknado isn't doable any more, and we're going to miss the +1 to cast and unbind, but to be honest this is still pretty good for a stock Slann build. Sure the whole Vortex now counts as the Slann and can be engaged in melee (and you can't use summoning it to push other units forwards) but that works both ways; it'll be super easy to have the Slann getting Look Out Sir bonuses. Combine with the +1 to saves and a nearby Eternal Warden, and your Slann's going to be pretty sticky considering how big and visible he is.

Also, you get to cast one whole extra spell. Now think about our summoning system. Yeah.

EDIT: Plus with the Vortex and the Wizard counting as a single model, you can measure spell ranges from the Vortex instead of the model on top. This ought to give you an extra 1" to 2" range.

Seeing a whole bunch of knee jerk reactions (not on these forums) about Seraphon being completely ruined by the casting and Vortex changes... People need to chill out and see how our warscrolls and faction abilities have changed before throwing their toys out the pram, it's not as if we were a top tier army without a couple of cheese tactics as it was!

Some of our batallions have received points reductions, as has the Bastiladon I believe... These are going to be huge changes for us, but hopefully for the better. Particularly with "look out sir!"... Just wait and see.

that's eh.. dissapointing... an extra cast is nice, but with the current rule of one I don't see it being all that good in most situations. The range change is fine and the change to engaging it in melee is fine as well, though I would've loved if it at least gave some protection to the wizard on top of it.

Other than that, I really don't like that the wizard can die if the vortex is dispelled and he can't be placed down... that just feels cheap and too gamey.

mwha, we do appear to be losing most advantages we had in terms of magic while others seem to benefit from the changes quite a lot. Basicly yet more powercreep on top of all the powercreep we're already experiencing. I do hope this means we'l get a new battletome soon-ish as we appear to keep falling further behind with more of our stuff being diminished. It doesn't help that the details currently are so vague. An announcement going "yea this influences your faction heavily so we're going to introduce a bunch of faction specific changes to ensure x, y & z" would already help a lot to stop the knee-jerk reaction I guess.

With the new summoning mechanic and the new spell lore for everyone I think that the Rule of One will not hurt us as much anymore as it does now.

It depends a bit on the point cost for the vortex (20-40 points maybe) but I think it will be usable. Yes, it destroys that one cheese tactic and to be honest I personally like that because it made me not want to play Kroak.

Having an additional spell means that it provides a nice bonus for all our wizards, not only Slann. A Starpriest that can cast both Starlight and arcane bolt for just a few points more is not too shabby.

And if you need additional protection for the Wizard on top you can maybe just use your additional spell to cast something defensive on the wizard himself. But IMO the rules make it clear that the BWV is meant to be used behind your lines or at least behind a chaff screen.
The additional range helps with that. Combined with our Slann's 1in6 chance to have more range (I assume that one will stay) I still think we have some nice magic buffs available.

You also get Line of Sight to most of the table which might be very useful for some spells, and the additional range will help immensely with predatory spells since you minimize the danger of being hit by them yourself, as you can cast them further away.

And last but not least: tactical options. The enemy does not know whether you will use a BWV or another spell for the same point cost. They do not know if you will use the additional spell to generate more summoning points or to cast spells (maybe even endless ones).
You can decide depending on the situation what to use it for.

I still think a +1 save bonus would have been nice at least, and I will miss the pushing of units as that was really cool for some lists.

But we will see. Overall I think the changes are for the best. The BWV was almost useless except for Kroak's or a Gaunt Summoner's cheese tactics. Now more wizards can use it.

EDIT: and Seraphon still have one advantage using it. Our wizards on top of their BWV can still be teleported using LoSaT it seems as the BWV becomes part of the model and isn't a piece of scenery anymore.

Yah, I definitely think this will see the vortex getting more use, not less. It just won't be used in a cheesey manner anymore... Much better all round.

Ok, let's think of some funny stuff to do with the new magic.
I'll assume for now that our allegiance abilities will stay as they are now.

Sacrificing a Starpriest by teleporting him near the enemy and summoning a predatory spell (or maybe even teleporting him away again after casting the spell) might be interesting.

1. Summon BWV
2. teleport Starpriest close to the enemy
3. Summon a predatory spell using the increased range. That will put it very close to the enemy.
4. Cast arcane bolt (or something else that does damage) with the Starpriest
5. Teleport the Starpriest back.

If the first teleport fails, either decide to send him anyway and sacrifice him (you can summon another one later) or cast something else and try again next round.

The only real waste would be if the endless spell is dispelled but then that's a risk you just have to take since the reward would be great as well. You get 12" on the purple sun for example, which means that its 9" move will take it deep into enemy territory.

Another good thing might be using the BWV for a Slann.
The Slann has almost no disadvantages from it IMO, because I rarely move him much in most of my games and he is tall enough to be hit by shooting anyway.

The Slann can now cast four spells, which you might want to do (the enemy will run out of unbinds eventually) or you might want to generate a whopping 13 summoning points which allows you to put 3 Tereadons or 20 Skinks onto the table. Every round.

I just read this on TGA, no clue if accurate though:

Here is some more info on the Endless Spells. Endless spell costs will range from 20 to 100 points, with a handful (3) of the endless spells clocking in at 20 points and Purple Sun being the only spell to clock in at 100 points. The new Balewind Vortex comes in at 40 points

I had hoped 30 points for the BWV but 40 is OK I guess.

40 is pretty good, its a number that I often seem to have left over at the end of a list and need to rethink or plug. That's pretty much the intention for a few of these spells.
