The World Cup 2026 thread!

England can only blame itself. And Tuchel.
You CANNOT just stop playing and think only to defend for 45°.

Absolutely... to think I spoke positively about Tuchel after the previous match.

The man was an absolute idiot here... what was he thinking to consider simply holding on after 1 goal would work? He should have brought in more strikers to keep up the pressure on Argentina, score more goals and keep their morale down. If he maintains this attitude in the play-offs against France he should be sacked after the end of this World Cup. He clearly doesn't have enough faith in England's potential were they just allowed and encouraged to play well.

I honestly don't think Argentina deserved this win at all... we lost it more than they won it. I hope Spain beat them soundly in the final.

And I hope FIFA punish them for pushing the Malvinas agenda after the match... they fined them £20,000 in 2014 for doing it, make it £100,000 this time. Or better yet £1 Million.

They probably won't given the way they allowed Biff Tannen to influence them, but it'd be satisfying if they did. Argentina's sore-arsed political whining should be quashed with contempt.

I do believe it's a bit of both.

Up 'til the goal, England was holding back Argentina. Messi & C were not a danger.
after the goal, the whole english team left the control of the game to Argentina, just trying to entrench around their area.
Of course Argentina is going to put pressure on you, become dangerous and create many situations for their comeback.
This attitude was entirely England's fault.

HOWEVER

we cannot say that England would have successfully held at bay Argentina.
If this Cup teached us something, is that Argentina grows and does its best in the last part of each game. You cannot dismiss their second half, which was probably their best one in the whole cup.
Even with a different approach from England, Argentina would have been dangerous and could have scored anyway.

Win or lose this Sunday, Messi has proven that he easily could still play in the big five European leagues. He never went to MLS because he was washed. Among the best players in the world his star has shone the brightest. 39 years old, this makes no sense.

Well, as much as it was in poor taste, I'd say that large sports events have always been also a stage for politics. In olympics games we even prevent athlets to partecipate because of the actions of their nation, in this world cup for a while it seemed possible that Iran would have been left out of it.
Apparently, Falklad / malvinas is still a sensible topic.

So who will win the final?

Northern Gibraltar or Western Falklands ?
As much as I am rooting for Argentina, I think it is 60%-40% in favour of Spain... unless it goes to penalties in which case I would flip those numbers.
