You could do them in a cream or a light grey, don't shade and highlight as normal but on the final highlight try to do light sourcing in pure...
You can usually just paint over an existing model if the paint isn't clogging the detail.

Yeah it can be a complete pain, I used to restore 1980's bmx bikes and shipped across 20 sets of snake belly tyres, cost be £60 at customs.
I agree with @DanBot The price from GW should be a constant, if GW started discounting models all the 3rd party retailers would have to discount...
You can also stick coins in the under side of your base to add weight but it could get very expensive depending on how many models you have :D

To paint a model white use a cream as your base and then highlight upto white, don't use a wash for shading as it makes the white look dirty....
