Funny I did a conversion with that same toy Steg... Definitely give it a good coat of primer before you paint it or it will stay sticky for some...
I have had prety good luck runing units of 5 or 6 with a mounted scar-vet.
Spears are definitively worth it in 7th.
in 7th you are stuck with whatever you chose in the first round.... In 8th you don't get a choice...

You can have 1 handler left in a 3 salamander unit and still have the unit work normaly... This in one of the advantages of runing larger...
They are NOT quick to fire, only Javelins are. (as far as Lizardmen are concerned)
Multiple shots is purely optional.
