    A sad little update. :(

In progress shot of the desert oasis before the disaster...

First the good, finished the palm trees for my desert oasis...
    100_6478.JPG 100_6479.JPG

And now the disaster. GW's water effects ruined my terrain piece (even though I only applied a thin layer [1-2mm] and allowed it 48+ undisturbed hours to dry). Sadly, the water pool was my first airbrush project.

I thought so, until the water effects dried so poorly. I don't really know how to fix it.

That is sad, I didn't see the damage on the final picture. You used an acrylic backer, right? You could potentially pop it out and scrape it down to start over.

With the amount of super glue I used to affix it, there is no way I could separate it. Those two pieces are bonded for life.

It doesn’t look so bad to me, mate, it’s still better than anything I could do - I’m a lot better at making things with cardboard than wood. ;)

Seriously though, I was thinking it would be a lot worse. Maybe you could use it as a frozen pond, replace the palm trees with snowy trees as you haven’t stuck them down yet and cover the whole thing with snow-flock? It may not go so well with your Tomb Kings, but it might go well with your Warriors of Chaos as part of a ‘Frozen North’ theme, and would be great when playing wargames near Christmas time!

    Thanks

Nothing wrong with working with cardboard. I've seen masterpieces made from all sorts of materials.

I agree, that it could be easily made to work with a snow or chaos wastes theme.

I don’t get it. Please explain in detail what the problem with the water is.

    o_O

It is shimmering/shines and it is blue. Not seeing the flaw. Do I need a bigger screen?

Is it the shimmer on the top that you don't like?
Add a sign that says "poisionus dont drink" or something, it would explain the shimmer.

Though how is GW's water? I've only used "woodland scenetics" in the past, and never had any issues with that.

It is much more noticeable in real life than in the picture. The top surface of the water should be shiny, clear and perfectly smooth. In my piece it is neither of these things. Mine looks patchy.

    Thank you.

The thing is driving me bonkers.

It's not the shimmer, it's the fact that it has a skin or a pattern on the very top of the surface. It looks almost as though the pond was in the process of freezing over in the winter. A pseudo combination of water and ice. I could make the effect work in a winter setting, but that would make no sense as it is intended to be a desert oasis and besides the colour palate I used on the water doesn't quite line up right with that.

This is my first experience with GW's water effects and it has been a disaster. I've heard that woodland scenics is really good. I wish I had gone that route.

    OK

I see it now. Put another layer of something over it? Maybe some gloss acrylic medium with some blue ink in it to tint it a bit?

It looks like there is some more depth to work with.

Could you sand and buff out the imperfections? Or is it a semi hard substance?

It might work, but it might still show through. It is an option though.

Intriguing... I think I will give it a try and let the chips fall where they may.

If all else fails buy some muffins or a pie!

The less expensive the better. Store brand. Wallyworld. What you want is the nice clear plastic lid...

Back paint it blue. Cut to shape. Drop it in over the failed pond. Give it a gloss coat.

Well a quick update. The oasis is officially dead.

I tried hitting the surface with a heat gun. It actually semi liquefied and all the imperfections disappeared. However, once it solidified again some of the imperfections returned, but it was better than before. Spurred on by this marginal amount of success I made a second attempt at it but I must have been a bit overzealous with the heat gun this time around and warped the acrylic underneath.

In hindsight, it would have been better to sand the piece as @LizardWizard had suggested. That was my backup should the heat solution fail, however I did not anticipate the warping of the under layer of acrylic. Live and learn I suppose.

In any event, the piece is no longer salvageable. RIP Desert Oasis 2018-2018.

Maybe I'll make a replacement one day, but for now I'll move onto finishing other projects (projects without water features!!).
