8th Ed. Poll: can a wizard who fails his Net of Amyntok strength test still attempt to cast his other spells

How would you inturpret the rules for the Net of Amyntok on a wizard attempting to cast spells?

  • The wizard takes a single strength test for the ENTIRE magic phase

  • The wizard must take a strength test for EACH spell he attempts to cast

If the Net of Amyntok is cast on a unit with a wizard in it and that wizard tries to cast a spell but fails the strength test, can the wizard still attempt to cast another spell (with an accompanying strength test)?

So this question was discussed at length in another thread that I had started. There seems to be differing opinions on how the rule should be interpreted and applied. I can see the merits of both sides of the argument.

Vote & discuss!

Damn Age of Sigmar has pulled all the traffic away from 8th edition. My precious poll is dying.

could you quote the exact wording of the spell..?

AoS is killing this poll... only 6 votes total... and we still have a deadlock.

Pollbringer is displeased ;)

That is very sad indeed :(

But at least some have voted, and maybe some just do not know what they want to vote?

could you quote the exact wording of the spell..?

The spell is worded as follows:

"The target unit must pass a Strength test every time it moves (included moving as a charger, fleeing, pursuing moving compulsorily, etc.) or shoots or casts spells until the end of the caster's next Magic phase. If the test is passed, the target acts normally. If the test is failed, the unit is unable to perform the desired action, remaining in place and takin D6 Strength 4 hits from the net's barbs of light."

Okay, that makes it easy.

"The target unit must pass a Strength test every time it" [or a wizard in the unit] ... "casts spells."

One ST test prior to each casting attempt and D6 Strength 4 hits [distributed as shooting?] if the ST test is failed.

The only questions I see are: do you use the highest ST score available in the unit? or the wizard's ST score? and if the test fails, do the ST 4 hits all land on the wizard, instead of on troops in the unit?

Page 10 of the BRB states "Where a model (or a unit) has more than one value for the same characteristic, as is the case with cavalry, for example, a characteristic test is always taken against the highest of the values". Although the cavalry example is not applicable, I'd say the rule would suggest the wizard could use the units strength if higher.

For the second question I would think that the strength 4 hits would hit the unit. "If the test is failed, the unit is unable to perform the desired action, remaining in place and taking D6 Strength 4 hits from the net's barbs of light."

Agree... disagree?

That is tough one. I would make one test to keep it simple and damage goes into unit - if wizard can be hit when unit shoots, so why can't unit be hit when wizard casts

Agreed. A wizard on a steed could have 3 other ST scores to pick from if he was embedded in a Cavalry unit.

Agreed, again.

A determined Wizard could mess up his own unit if he tried several times. Final thought:

"...is unable to perform the desired action, remaining in place..."

should the wizard's version of that be:

"...is unable to cast further spells, refraining from additional attempts..." ??

That's the big question. I'm really not sure. I was hoping the poll would provide a general sense of how to interpret the rule, but at the moment we have a 5-5 deadlock.
