    Hey guys!

    I was curious to know what the rules are for using a base thats larger than the one that came with the model?

    Im planning a conversion of a Slann riding a custom dino (built from a Mournfang Cav model) and didnt know if it would be allowed to be used then. SIDE question...if the palanquin is mounted can I still use its fly ability or no?

    Thanks friends!

    I have wondered what kind of trouble I would get into for this sort of thing.

    The diagonal of a 20x20 square base exceeds the diameter of a 25mm round, etc.

    “Rebasing” for AoS would be or would have been simple if the new bases had been big enough for the Old bases to drop inside of.

    According to this GW is fine with you fielding stuff on whatever base you'd want. Though they do point out that sticking to their default sizes helps with streamlining tournaments and I'd guess most people will ask you to use the "official" ones.

    Having said that, I doubt anyone is really going to throw a fit when you use a 20x20 square vs a 25 round base unless you're facing the most competitive of players ever...

    As for flying; your model would be a proxy, so the flying rule would still hold regardless of how weird you make the model. Provided it's of course accepted as a proxy in the first place.

    As long as you clearly aren't using larger or smaller bases to get a measuring advantage
    (Such as having Saurus Warriors on 25mm bases to get more of them into range, or using a very small base for a monster so it cannot be hit by many surrounding models)
    you will most likely be fine.

    Not an example of what I am pondering.

    That is what I don’t know. I haven’t got a clue what would cause a “measuring advantage”.

    What I am looking for is a Lazy Rebasing to Circles option...
    ~~~~~~~~~
    Example one: I take figure already glued to a 20x20 square. I find (or have made) a round base that is bigger than 25mm. It has to be bigger because a 20mm square will not fit inside a 25mm circle. I end up with a unit of infantry (that formerly used 20mm squares) based on ~28mm circles.
    Example two: I have some custom ovals made. They are a little bigger than whatever the standard AS1 Cavalry oval is. They are just big enough to encompass and contain a 24x50mm rectangular hole. The mounted model can drop in for AS2 or detach the oval for the older game.
    ~~~~~~~~~
    ...that is also an easy switch back to Warhammer 5,6,7, or 8 option.

    Slightly larger bases won't really be a problem I guess. The only potential advantage you can get from that is making a slightly longer conga-line, but if your base is only a couple mm bigger you're going to need an awefull lot of models before it actually becomes an actual advantage.
    So slotting a square base in a slightly larger than normal circle base shouldn't be much of an issue in most circumstances.

    hell, arguably you create a disadvantage. Those few mm might make it impossible for your backline with spears to get their hits in. So you can Always try that argument if someone complains.

    Some advantages of larger bases:
    - easier conga line
    - greater range of abilities
    - blocking space more efficiently.

    Some disadvantages
    - teleporting and movement in general is harder because you need more space, so keeping those 9" or 3" distance to something is harder
    - staying fully within a terrain feature is now harder
    - the enemy can surround you with more models
    - horde units get less models into range

    Extreme example:
    Imagine you put your Lord Kroak on a 140mm base. Since distances are measured from the edge of the base, the threat curcle of your Celestial Deliverance spell now grew by ~3" in all directions.

    Another extreme example: If you put two Gryph Hounds on bases like the Maw-Krusha uses them, then each one of them has a huge circle where enemy deep strikes or teleports would be hit hard by the Warning Cry ability, because both their detection circles are bigger, and more of their allied ranged units might be in range to be triggered for shooting.

    Extreme counter example: you put your Saurus Warriors on 25mm bases. When using spears and being in base contact with each other and the enemy they can now get the third rank into attack range instead of only two.
    Also the second rank can now hit with their 1" bite attacks, instead of only the first one.

    I would call that a significant advantage.

    With AoS2 there will be an official base size list, I imagine tournaments will be enforcing this. For casual gaming I'm sure no one will care.

    Ok cool...well thats a whole lot of info. Boiling it down it seems like its probably not the best idea. Ive done some reimagining on my piece to aid with this problem.

    Im going to have the palanquin pulled like a chariot. The base will be 2 parts. The regular slann sized base magnetically sitting on the larger base carrying the chariot. That way it will look really cool and still be able to be used if/when they decide it HAS to be on the correct base size.

    Thanks for all the input though everyone!!

    i still have the Base Problem with my Dread Saurian. I dont find anything that can fit for him.
    The biggest Base is 170x105mm and thats sounds really small. Maybe i could get his feet on it
    but it would be difficult to settle the base rule.
    Any good ideas?

    The base for my DS is still the square one...
    If the largest AoS base is too small, try to cut from a hard plastic sheet your own oval base.

    Sand his feet nice and level.
    Drill out a recess in each foot to receive a magnet.
    Build several basing options.
    Job One for each style of base is to stick a washer or some other metal bit down first (one for each foot) then add rocks, sand, green stuff plants or whatever.

    You could do a separate round base for each foot.
    You could put the hind feet on an oval but the lone foot on a circle.
    You could extend that rectangle base making a longer one that fits better.

    Swap as needed.
    Keep all options open with such an expensive model.

    Looks like DSaurian’s feet just barely fit a chariot base? Would two chariot bases end to end be about the right size to occupy all the space under the beast?

    50x200 ?

    interesting. so if you buy two 50x100 chariot bases, they could end up to a fitting size?
