I am in no way affiliated with these guys and I am critical of their business model however their app releases today.

Been taking a look and while it looks cool, I am not sure if this is actually useful or not. Not for fantasy or anything that requires a square base anywho. I managed to speak to the moderator of the sub reddit and they would be open to developing other game systems if there was enough interest.

What's your guys take on it? yay or nay?

meh, it's fiddly and depends a lot on getting the calibration right.

Also, personally it'd annoy me a lot to have to pull out my phone every other moment, unlock the thing open the app, get it to focus right etc.

Imho, the only real use I can see is dealing with a table that's absurdly full so you can't measure anything without knocking stuff over.

Though this might eventually get interesting if you can set it up permanently on a table and project on top of the table without the constant need to take out phones and calibrate.

I agree with @Canas :wideyed: (what in Slaanesh's holy hell is going on here)

Interesting use of AR indeed. This is also something that could be enhanced by using Microsoft Hololens instead of the phone or by a clever use of projector.

I took a look, and the concept is interesting and has a potential, but the current execution seems subpar.

From the videos they share, it seems like too much work setting up, and then not easy to use. I especially did not understand why you need to rescan the board barcode every time you reopen the phone... instead, it should have remembered your last board, until you tell it to remove it.

The business model also seems rather poor and is screaming "friends developing in the evening", at least their current goal on Patreon is way too low for anything else. Now, this could be a good thing, since they have low overhead, cost, etc. but this also means development will go quickly at the start and then start to go slower and slower as they burn out.

With that in mind, I would hold off until the app is feature complete, and actually can be considered for use in a game.

That's the vibe I got Initially. There will be a free version with basic features that should be good enough to test its merits so we will see.

"friends developing in the evening"
That's how 90% of mobile apps are made. Including some that became top grossing ones over time. Also I remember doing similar kind of app during one of our programming labs in the university, so its not a rocket science what these guys are doing there.

I understood it as you have to rescan it only if you came back to the game after longer period of time, but still, if its your only table you play why not to save the coords permanently. I think they simply demonstrated this functionality... wrong.

I think their communication is a little poor overall. Was hard to find pricing info etc..

As soon as it's approved on the Apple store I'll give it a go.
