I was playing a match and cast spirit of the forge on a unit of chaos knights. There were only 3 knights left in the unit and a exalted hero. I caused 7 wounds on the unit. My question is would the excess wounds also kill the character? The way we resolved it was only the knights were killed.
The 7 hits should indeed be distributed as shooting, which means that all 4 take 1 hit and the remaining 3 are then randomly allocated among the 4 (roll a dice for each hit, 1 - 3 hits the unit, 4 the character and re-roll 5's and 6's).
That is not the case. The hit are not allocated to specific models, as at the time of the shots being targetted there where more then 5 models in the unit. This means that actually, the Character is untouchable. Hmm...
The OP says there are 3 knights and the character left in the unit when he cast the spell, seems to me there are only 4 people in the unit . As there are no 5 rank and file models the character is hit as well as the rest of the unit, as Bibamus confirmed
Wops, I forgot about the origional question and was going thinking about larger units. For reference, this means 5 skinks + 1 Slann can be hit by 12 S10 hits (from Gateway) and the Slann cannot be harmed.
UNLESS 1 skink is a champion. be carefull, if there are 4 models + champion + character hits are randomised and there is no "Lo,S!" roll. champions act like characters in this situation, that why i usually field 5 + champ COC so i can put a scar vet in there and be relatively safe
not that i'm aware of. the only requirements for "Lo,S!" is that the unit has to have 5 rank and file models beside the characters... more characters won't modifiy this as the rules means a generic tropper pushes teh character away, 2 generic troopers can push 2 characters away just aswell
Then I think you are incorrect in saying a unit of 4 regular models + unit champion + character means no "LoS!" rolls. On page 81 of the BRB Champions are described as rank and file models and so there would simply be two "LoS!" rolls, one for the unit champion and one for the character.
Warhammer FAQ 2. Feb 2009. Q. Does a unit champion count towards the 5 rank-and-file models needed to provide a Look Out Sir! roll to a character in the same unit? A. No, because when the unit is targeted by ranged attacks, they count as Characters and not as rankand- file models (see the last paragraph on page 81). Thus there is no Look Out Sir roll or rolls for the above mentioned situation.
Thanks for the FAQ reference. That could be useful for me in the future against my Cav heavy WoC opponent.
ergo, you'd need five rank and file guys, a unit champ, and a hero in order to get two Lo, S! roles (barring two charactes etc). Am I right? Seven total in the unit?
I think unit champions get LoS, otherwise sniping them first would become quite common. And since they don't count as rank and file for LoS, they must be counted as characters for this purpose.
I know unit champs are given some hero/lord special rules but not others. BRB would give the definative answer. I was almost certain that they did get LoS rolls too...seems like I need to start bringing my BRB to work with me as well...heh.
Just to post something more definitive... (BRB p. 81, last bullet point) "Champions are treated as characters when their unit is hit by ranged attacks (eg, they benefit from the "Look out, Sir!" rule, etc)."
