there is still a disconnect here. Or at least just as much of a disconnect as rebasing models for aesthetic reasons considering the models are being showcased in the brand new reopened war hammer world.

That makes more sense to me than "let's totally destroy an existing system that makes x amount of money, angering the entire fan base, with the non realistic hope that a brand new system is going to make x+1"

It's insanity. Sure, it's possible. But it's just as possible that shit will stay the same. That there is aesthetic reason behind it.

I just don't like pretending that the ONLY reason they could possibly have oval bases is because GW is moving everything over to round based.

    It's absurd.

Either way, quango put my opinions more eloquently than I did.

    Let's wait and see.

But Putzfrau....i see your point, but GW should also have realized that if they indeed would merely have changed the basing for aesthetic reasons it would create confusion amongst their customers.....posibly resulting in delayed purchases (as i mentioned allready above), without the garantee the money of those delayed purchases will end up in gw's pocket at all.

And as allready mentioned above the mixed nature of the bases is percieved by many as very unaesthetic. So, the aesthetic reason does not hold up that well either.

Anyway, regardless of how you look at it, it is indeed totally absurd.

Not that I want to get drawn back into this debate, but I never made that statement...

I wasn't trying to say you did. Sorry if it came across that way. Was merely expressing to you what my opinion was.

They are doing one thing radically different with this release: the radio silence. On all other edition releases they have tried to control the message, put out a positive spin, e.g:

"...players all over the world wait in eager anticipation of the most Fantastic and Brilliant version of Warhammer..."

It is obviously different. The radio silence, lips sealed tactic is new. The F&B guys have either been fired or silenced.

It is a trial balloon? They've said nothing. Committed to nothing. But they have gotten reactions, which they can gauge and assess as they see fit.

The idea of switching over needed to be tested.

There is an incorrect underlying assumption here: that it would be hugely expensive to re-base a few showcase models.

In fact it could be done rather easily and on the cheap.
    • Step 1: is design some bespoke new, round, and oval bases. These have a deep, full depth, drop in area. GW has 3D design software and access to 3D printers. They already use both to prototype new gaming models. A simple geometric object would be very easy and quick.
    • Step 2: is print a few prototype bases. Hand them over to the HM guys when they arrive from the printers.
    • Step 3: is sit the old rectilinear base inside the new base.
    • Step 4: is bury the old base and fill in the new base with superglue and fresh but matching basing materials.
Step 1 is an hour's work in the software for an experienced 3D modeler.
Steps 3 & 4 are a couple of afternoons by two? guys on the HM team.
The biggest expense is paying for the 3D prints of the new test bases.

Anyone could try this for themselves. ReaperMinis is making drop-in round bases (so that a gamer could put a metal mini with an integral metal base into a regulation D&D base). They only have 1, 2, and 3 inch available because those are the most common D&D sizes.

Worst case scenario here is the new 9th edition needs everything on round and oval bases. These new bases are BIGGER than the current rectangles or squares. So, once the new dimensions are known we get together an order to Litko (or somebody) for clear rounds and ovals. Like is going on with the dice.

Either N810 or I can throw together the template files.

Then you sit your artfully landscaped square bases on top of the clear "Corner-Less" bases. Attach permanently, or with magnets, or with pegs as it suits you. (For all I know 10th edition will go back to rectangles... :shifty: or triangles...so a temporary setup might be better).

    Hexagons!!

While all this is heart-wrenching for us veteran players, or as GW apparently calls us, "beardies", I just wanted to say that everyone here is doing a great job of self moderation on such a touchy topic! L-O has the finest forumites on the internet. :D

Here is the cheapo, DIY, version of re-basing

Items required are two: Fender Washers of various sizes and magnetic Vehicle Sign material (it is just like magnetic business card stock, but a little thicker and a little stronger, magnetically).
    • Washers get glued under the existing square miniature bases.
    • The magnet material gets trimmed to the new shape: oval or whatever.
    • Paint the magnet material to look like flocked ground, battlemat or tabletop.
    • The washers stick to the magnet stuff (works in spite of a thin paint layer) the magnet stuff marks out the new ground footprint, the new rules might require.
And, if it turns out there is a skirmish rules game that needs round bases but also a more traditional game that keeps squares and ranks this method allows models to switch back and forth from one set to the other.

I finally had a chance to look at the Bastilodon from the blog pictures and the one in the book.

It does look like it is the same model.

I noticed another thing: the edges of the new ovals and rounds look thicker. A normal base is about 3mm thick. These new ones look thicker. This is consistent with the idea they created some one-off prototypes with a deep drop-in and just covered up the existing rectangular base.

Also, the snakes on the ground under the Bastilodon are different, there are extras or they got re-positioned.

"Nothing I have ever said suggests suggests that there will not be a mass combat fantasy battle game. Every rumour, from any source seems to suggest that it will all scale up somehow to bigger battles, no one has ever said that there will be a skirmish game FULL STOP."

That's from Harry on Warseer. Round bases and large games doesn't make sense imo. Would make a mess moving blocks of 30-100 models.

I heard a rumor that everything is going to round bases. Except Night Goblin Fanatics. Those are going to squares. Muhahahaha!

EDIT: A silver lining to this round base debacle is that if they are rebasing LM for the new 9th edition, that would be (what passes for) hard evidence that LM will continue to be supported in 9th.

    Here is the $640 question:

Will units continue to be rectangles?

At some point it will be much less expensive to play Trayhammer than it will be to try to keep up with the new figure and basing requirements.

Trayhammer is the version of Warhammer where the number of guys in the unit is represented by the size of the tray and the number of figure spaces marked on it and not by the number if figures actually present.

Unless they use movement trays that accept round bases. They already exist so it isn't really a far stretch.

HAHAHA... that would be such a GW move... rubbing a little salt in the wound!

From what I have read, all the current armies will be playable in 9th. Lizardmen just won't receive an further updates/support. This is merely the slow death of our army.
