Old Ones forgive me! I've been looking at Skaven recently, my first ever model; including Warhammer models dating years back was Ikit Claw, he was given to me but I really can't remember by who. Every time I walk by the cabinet, he just stares right at me. Not sure if that creepy staring from an old model is telling me he wants a game again or what? I have got random Skaven scattered about from what my boyfriend gave me in a bit box. But I know I will be needing more defiantly. Should I start a Skaven army? What do you guys think? Let Ikit have another run or keep him stuck in a cabinet? Should I also update his colours from the faded out ones, just repaint them?
I sort of like keeping inferior previous models around to show how I've improved painting. Also, I have so many unpainted models, repainting seems extravagant. I thought about collecting Skaven. I think their random assortment of special rules would be fun, I like their fluff, and while Skaven are unfriendly, the people on the Under-Empire forum are very friendly. Still, I don't think I'd enjoy painting mangy fur over and over again, and a typical Skaven army has a model count exceeding most other WHF armies. Maybe there is a bit of contrarian-ness too. Skaven seem to be the pet army (along with Warriors of Chaos) of the WHF writers and developers, so I don't want to take it. I also am not seriously expanding my collection until I can get some concrete information on what 9th edition has in store for the hobby.
From a painting view they have some fantastic models, I have the IOB set and I have bought a few more models, doom wheel, Snitch and the 2011 games day warlord, I don't think I could buy and paint a full army in one hit as the clanrats would become tedious, but I have never gamed so I have no experience of batch painting models. Lizardmen are the nearest thing I have to a full army along with High elves and Ogres but again all bought for the painting not gaming aspect of the hobby, but we will be venturing into the gaming soon and as it's just me and my son we will probably build all the above into 2000pt armies eventually.
My other Fantasy army is Skaven. Got interested in their fluff after reading ours, and then got hooked I find playing Skaven from time to time, pretty fun. Though the results I get with them is a lot less consistent than Lizardmen, due to the nature of their rules. Some games they do awesome, and other times the dices are not on your side and you end up blowing up all of your stuff instead of the enemy.
I think Skaven will be my type of army that will be for fun. I can get rather bitter during losing stage (Due to past bullying about me losing) Skaven might help me have fun about losing without that bitterness. Blowing up seems entertaining it seems. I've been painting some Skaven and I don't get sick of them at all, maybe later but I don't know. Plus I have to paint at least one miniature from every single army (including 40k) for my portfolio when I become a commissioner for painting models and maybe basing. And of course not get sick of painting them.
Personally I think that the Skaven are blessed with some of the best models in the game (looking at you, Screaming Bell) and with their diverse tech, they are a pretty cool sight on the tabletop. Sure they're our mortal enemies, but damn if they aren't cool.
Undead have the Skaven and Greenskin beat on this I believe. You can take almost any model and make it a ghost or zombie.
Actually at the Tauranga club one guy made a Slaanesh Daemons army out of Lizardmen and they are so cool!!
Brought a box of Stormfiends a week ago, comparing them to their statline of rat ogres and rules, it's like Skaven got a lot more serious in The End Times. When I look at one of the models replacement foot, it reminds me of the Cyberwolf mechanical paw. Seems like GW are sneaking in some 40k design.
Damn, Stormfiends are some of the most overpowered shooters in the game with a full unit of Ratling Cannons. I answer Ratling Cannon Stormfiends will a full Khaine magic turn of Comet of Casandora recasts on and around them because I'm bloody scared of them.
Makes me want to know what Skaven models but I've got to start saving really for 9th when Lizardmen rise up/ land onto the new world.
Haha, Island of blood set, doom wheel, snitch and gamesday warlord, codex and heraldy book on at £70 posted
I think you should wait, merely paint for fun and practice, until July 11th, or June 11th,.. ...whenever the big announcement of the transition to 9th is.
