They say bases don't matter, but the rules indicate otherwise. You are better off on square bases.

Plus, can't wait to stack my lead models on top of other peoples' decorative bases just so I can get in range with more stuff. Hey, buddy, them's da roolz.

We can use hexagons if we want! Stack your models even closer that way.

    Huh  please explanate...

...no pewter or plastic [?] in your collection then...
:( What if I make a new base for my old base to sit inside of that is like a little fort with spikey rocks on it that your base can't stand on?

Well my models are staying where they are on their bases, but I may have to tweak my weapons so they poke more forward for my Saurus. Depends on what happens.

Everything is measured from the model and when everything within 3 inches can attack... its in your best interest to just pile them in as close as possible.

I would HOPE there is some type of ruling to mitigate this??? but honestly its not something i'm hugely concerned with.

Under the movement rules you CANNOT CROSS enemy models.

Climbing on their base = crossing the model. The exact size or shape of a base does not matter but it is PART OF THE MODEL.

But its not :/ There is nothing in the rules that describes this, and its pretty explicit about everything being measured from the model.

I can totally understand the logic of including the base with the model, but theres nothing actually written to make that indisputably fact.

This is about moving and placing models and nothing to do with measuring.

"[A model] can be moved vertically in order to climb or cross scenery, but cannot be moved across other models."

I suppose I have started the first RAW/RAI debate topic for these rules.

Yes... but how many rules debates can actually be spawned from only 4 pages of rules? :shifty::shifty::shifty:

"A model’s base isn’t considered part of the model – it’s just there to help the model stand up – so don’t include it when measuring distance" .. Um, Rules Page 1.

My laziness has payed off! I have only a small handful of models actually primed, much less painted or based. I practiced a bit with some old demons of chaos that I bounced back and forth with for 40k. They are mostly on round bases but with 16 on squares so I could get a good front line in. Wasn't too tough.

For my lizards, only the skinks and saurus are on bases, and I look forward to putting the monsters on extra oval bases. I like the circle/oval looks, and with the exception of Kings of War, circular seem to be the favored for a lot of games. This lets me take my armies across the gaming world and that's fine by me! I just like playing with cool looking toys.

Edit: The above about skirmish vs ranked and massed armies is true though, and I respect that aspect greatly in WHFB. It does feel and look wonderful, to have armies march off to war.

    Ha!

I see the community was majorly with me on the no-basing deal-breaker of the 9th edition.
