That's my point, you need a solid system in place if you want to convert to rounds. I think your idea would work nicely, especially for smaller models. Rounds should be selected that best represent the square bases that originally came with the models. The important thing is that it can't be an arbitrary decision... oh think model X would look nice on a YYmm diameter base.

A lot of tournaments would state such a rule...

I don't remember reading it in the book. Appendix?

Because many, many GW models fitted their square bases only with difficulty. particularly when ranking up. They over hung edges and would rankle up instead of neatly rank up.

But your thought was: a 40x40 square would convert to a 40mm round?

I see at least one repeated inaccuracy in that chart. How do we know where they got the dimensions of all the new bases from? such as all those ovals... Did not see their source data.

This is what the link led to. Copy-pasted just the LM section. Also, corrected some errors I spotted.

    Edit:
    Notes:
The original had tidy columns (which I failed to replicate) and it did not have: "Model-Name——NNxNNsquare——NNround——Unit-Type" (my replacement for the column headings).
GW Cavalry bases are really only 24x50.

No offense, but tournaments (and their rules) mean nothing to me. I don't remember seeing it anywhere in the book. I figured that it's always been implied, however, that models ought to be placed on the bases with which they're shipped. I never saw a rule stating that. I could have just missed it.

Yeah. It seems like that ought to work, anyway.

Problem: the circle within the square contains less area and some (many) figures need the long diagonal available on the square because it is the only way they fit.

Ahh gotcha. I can see how that would be trouble for some models, yeah. I suppose my problem with the chart was with the dead area that some of the size increases created for smaller units, such as skinks. A skink on a 25mm base just looks odd. I've got one on a 20mm round at my apartment - works fine.

Would the tiniest bases possible be advantageous for purposes of piling in extra attackers? I could draw up alternative bases and send any design to Litko...

    15x20mm oval for Skinks?

It would be advantageous for that player during the game, yeah. It would also advertise that they're a total cheeseball... which would not be so advantageous for them in the long run.

I understand that all base sizes are changing, so it's pretty moot... but a Skink on a 25mm base looks really empty in a unit of the same. I'd rather keep my stuff as-is, making changes only where necessary. Either way, it's not game-breaking.

What if one were to order crystal clear acrylic bases from Litko? Put no, repeat none, basing material on the base: no paint, no sand, no nothing. Then you could stack your models on each other's bases to cram in as many as possible during a pile-in phase?

The rules seem to allow that, for the moment.

I am thinking Tournament Organizers will need to address this somehow, if they use AoS and don't stick with 8.

The scenarios that you guys come up with are comical.

I feel sorry for you if you're limited to opponents like that, I guess.

They are releasing models on round bases soon. I wanted a carnosaur and slann for Christmas but if they are just sold as round bases than they will look weird with my square base lizardmen. Do you think it matters? Any advice?

You could always make a base or buy one for pretty cheap online.

But do you think 1 or 2 models that have round bases in a square base army would matter?

Game-wise... not really. Aesthetically... that's a very personal thing, if it doesn't bother you then don't worry about it.

If you need/want a base different from what ever is in the box order one from LITKO. (Unless you are in NZ or HK. Shipping might get a bit $$$$) Google them. I don't remember if it is allowed to post a commerce link in this thread or not.

They are a company that will supply bases for wargames, lasercut out of several choices of materials.

    Hey!

Abusing this thread for a question:

Is it possible to put the old slann (4TG and slann on seat) on a 50mm round base? Do i have to use cork to stop overlapping the TG over the base Corner?

    Hi!
I tried to do it but the old slann is a bit too big. I think the best way is to put some scenic elements on the top on the round base to make it bigger.
I was also thinking about bending the guards feet, but I don't think it is a good idea...

I get the feeling that they mostly did this when converting base sizes.
