Contest February - April 2016 Visual Art Contest - WIP Thread

The Dark Knight surveyed the dank alley from his rooftop vantage, his midnight cape clutched across his cowl. A single phosphorous light flickered and buzzed in the foggy darkness. It had been an alley just like this where, all those years ago...

The Caped Crusader put such thoughts from his mind. In the alley below, the mafia goons looked up as they thought they caught the noise of a faint hissing. Suddenly the light smashed and died for good, with a tinkle as something small and metallic hit the ground beneath. Carved in the symbol of a bat. The goons drew their weapons in shaking hands, desperately swinging around to peer into each impenetrable corner. A man at the back suddenly vanished, without even the time to draw breath and scream. The others turned as they heard his weapon clatter on the floor, and a hail of thunderous bullets was discharged into the inky depths. As their revolvers drew blanks, suddenly the Bat-Man was upon them, a blur of moving shadow and muscle, shrugging off all blows and dispatching his opponents with terrible ease.

As the last man hit the ground, Bruce turned to the cargo box they'd been guarding. Hefting a crowbar, he began to lever off the lid. Suddenly his whole body tensed, as he felt a strange, rhythmic vibration in the ground. He dropped the crowbar and fired his grappling gun into the inky sky, vanishing from the alley as swiftly as he had come.

Alone again on a dizzying rooftop, the Dark Knight could see to the very edge of Gotham's sprawl. There, in the murky distance, great figures were lumbering. Their every step sent a shockwave through the city. Batman engaged his nightvision goggles and increased the magnification. The figures looked like...giant lizards? One clutched a God-sized spear and seemed to have a chunk of eggshell on his head the size of a city block. The other...was that a huge manifestation of the video game character Bowser???

They were getting closer. Soon the devastation would be terrible. This was no job for the Dark Knight. There was only one thing to do. He tapped a few buttons on his wrist interface.

"Sir?" came Alfred's familiar voice in his earpiece.

"Get me...the Justice League," breathed Bruce.

"At once, sir."

He stared out at the giant lumbering figures. The only hope was that Clark and Diana could get here in time.

A great voice seemed to echo across the cityscape. It was hard to make out, but it sounded like one of the giant figures was saying "moaaaaaar".....
I demand a recount of the short story contest! All my votes go to this!

The BEST EVA and first eva L-O visual art competition has only 25 days left for moaning about lack of time to put an entry in

That was on the 6th so you have less than 3 weeks. ;)
But a half finished entry still shows support for the contest, and you never know, incomplete entry may spark some minimalist feelings bringing out our inner art critic, with glasses raised high and noses turned higher we may decree your partially finished entry as brilliant and not only vote for it but try to pay you money for the original.

Or maybe not. Point is you don't know if you don't try, and the more entries the more likely the odds of a second one. Then there is a second chance to enter a fully finished project.

There is no way that I'm going to be finished in 3 weeks
You could show a work in progress of your brilliant Gura'dai conversion. Was an orc, changed into gura'dai to fit into your continuity. Boom! Thematically golden and we get the visuals to go with the beautiful fluff you have been fleshing out! Just one idea anyway! I believe in you! You can do this.

Because I hate myself I went from digital to traditional for the picture. and Yes, they have pants

thanks! no too much I can add in now that I have put some color down. but I am very pleased with it!

SoB: How did all those monkeys get on stage?
CF: There's going to be a lot of crap on stage.
Sob: There was already a lot of crap on stage!

Gave Crowsfoot a crow since I couldn't give him a Terradon.

I'm flarted. I think dioramas are against the rules, but let me look in the big box of valuable prizes for something for you, Bowser.

No, the dioramas are fantastic and should definitely enter. The next step is for bowser to make a stop motion.

Weird. I think the rules were meant to preclude models and dioramas (dioramae?) but they don't. So @neveroddoreven will enter and we are all screwed. Thanks for pointng that out TDF (in sarcastic voice).

Here is an update of the thing

That is looking pretty awesome, Hype. Try cheating by manipulating the exposure / contrast using the link above - I think the colour density would look awesomer with a boost. Don't dump the idea of doing some other digital post production if you want to uber-tweak.

Thank you for the subtle nod Bob..I had tottaly forgotten about this 0_0 Time to get my scribbling on! I think I may have left it a bit late to do the whole 3D model thing...

Here is an update of the thing
That looks so cool! I love the pose :D

Hey @Phoedinn, do you have a 3D WIP you could clean up for an entry? Or even just a sample - I want to know what you are bringing.

Uh...yeah probably actually! Just looked at the entry date again and I still got over a month. I'll post the blockout I did a little while ago and try to do some more work today :)
I'll post the images when I get home!

Don't worry so much about time, we wnjoy the WIP as much as the finished product! Enter anyway and let us see what you got!

Hang on, is this still due April 30th? I'm seeing posts saying less than 25 days to go...

Oh, I'm a goof.

The Comp was meant to be Feb- April with entries due March 30 and April being voting month.

But I put April 30 as the entry deadline in the rules 'cos... goof.

This comp was always going to be "late", but I had been planning to eventually synch them one month later than the story comps. (that is Jan - Write, Feb- vote on writing and draw, March - vote on drawing. April start over with a drawing comp.)

Given it is in the (error prone) rules, it would be unfair to exclude any entries up to April 30. BUT it is undesirable to have all the artists going nuts and being unable to focus on writing during writing month for the next story comp. In addition, we would go straight from April drawing AND writing month into the next drawing month for the following art comp. Even us intellectuals need the occasional break.

Dilemmasaurus!

Proposal:

  • I will alter the art comp finish date to 14 April (a two extension, or a 4 week deadline, depending if you are Phoedinn or not)
  • I will curtail the voting period to the end of April (2 and a bit weeks)
  • We start next comp one month behind the next story comp with the same theme as the story comp (ie drawing month- May, Voting month- June, theme up to @Slanputin or the censors)
  • It's all my fault, Boohoo.

Please give me feedback / alternatives. I will alter the rules-post-deadline in one week if that proposal seems fair enough.
