That makes sense! And I hadn't thought about sidestepping the two units at all! That's a really smooth way of keeping the plan hidden from an opponent - I was wondering whether it would be giving away too much if one of the units started behind the other from setup. By marching in a line and then pushing one forward while pulling the others into the gap, the whole trap is set up in one move. Definitely going to use this if I can!

It was starting to get a little too suggestive.

Of course! I'm organising a gaming weekend with two friends (one poncy Elves and the other boring Kingdoms of Men) at some point in July so will take some pictures. We're all new to KoW, and only two of us have played WFB before (KoM player and me) so it should be interesting. The KoM player is an absolutely fantastic tactician so I'm expecting to get absolutely mauled.

I'm trying to find a local club who play KOW but it's not going well atm, playing my 9yr old son although fun is not the most tactical game but he is interested in going to the Tourny in October but as a joint venture, were torn between Dwarfs, Sallys or Undead.

Whereabouts are you in the UK? I take it you've already checked the CommunityWalk map?

I look forward to seeing you there! Sallys FTW. And the more players they see with 'Sallys' (GW Lizardmen), the more chance they'll see the potential market of making Sally models themselves. Or that may just be me being hopeful.

It's a shame I didn't get back into the game a couple of years ago when I was living in Ulverston! Hopefully you get some luck in your search - there's nothing better at improving one's game than having your arse handed to you repeatedly.

I played my first ever Kings of War battle yesterday evening and absolutely loved it! I played Dwarfs (I borrowed an army) and against an opponent with Undead with a Kill! scenario (the army lists were both created by the owner of the armies). The end result was me losing a troop of cavalry and one war machine and him losing every unit except a Revenant King and a Necromancer, so all in all I think it went rather well.

The main thing it got me thinking about was the tactics I'll be using with my Clash of Kings army. With the army list I've got I think I could absolutely maul battleline armies (ones that move forwards and attack in close combat). I've got hench infantry that can withstand some punishment and flank with others in the next turn. I also think I could do fairly well against gunline armies, as I've got chaff to help my infantry reach their lines and some cavalry to get their quickly. My concern is whether my army could effectively deal with fliers - if a heavy flier drops behind my lines I'll have a Mage with Fireball (10) and not much else. The only other option would be leaving a Fire Drake behind my own lines to use his Breath Attack (16), but it'll always take him two turns to get into combat (one to face the flier, one to charge - and that's only if the flier has run away again). And it also means he won't be attacking the enemy battle line.

Has anyone got any suggestions to deal with this? Also, are there any other army strategies that people think my army list might be weak against? The tournament will be against random players so I need to at least have some tactics to mitigate any strategy an opponent might throw at me, while also maintaining some synergy between my units so I have an effective offensive force.

@Itepixcauh , that guide is fantastically useful, thank you! It'll be interesting in testing to see whether I have enough units that I can happily leave behind.

@Crowsfoot , the Skylord I was hoping to use on the offensive to target war machines, weaker characters and unit rears. Only Fire Drake with the ability to fly is one with a Clan Lord on, and that is a lot of points to spend on something spending most of the game waiting around!
