Rogue One. Obviously! The characters were so much more original and well-designed. And even @NIGHTBRINGER liked seeing Darth Vader slaughter the Rebels at the end. Rogue One is amazing, and long live the Rogue One team, the true badasses of the Star Wars saga!

Rogue One is my favourite Star Wars film out of all of them. You have modern, super slick visuals, awesome battles on a huge scale, and tons of Easter eggs. Plus, the way I got to see it was extra cool

Episode 7! Rogue One had a massive dull spot in the middle where I almost fell asleep, apart from a couple of leads the characters were forgettable and without any real depth.

First of all, I enjoyed both of them when seeing them.

What Rogue One messed up in my opinion was that they didn't manage to make me care about the characters.
The story was way better than TFA but the characters didn't grip me. Rey and Finn did.

TFA had many more cringe-worthy moments than RO although RO also had a few ones.
Both overdid the fan service a bit as well.
RO gets a few bonus points because it was more original.

I'll give TFA a _tiny_ inch on RO because to me it felt more meaningful for the future, leaving stories to tell.

EDIT: And just for the sake of completeness the cringe-worthy moments for me:

    Rogue One:
    - The robot. I didn't hate him but...meh.
    - Tarkin (still bearable but I kept staring at Tarkin because I knew he was CGI and when you look closely it shows. It distracted my from the scene My wife didn't notice)
    - first Vader scene (Krennic meets Vader). Dunno why but I hated it.
    - Leia (holy crap SO BAD)
    - Cheesy death scene of whatever-her-name-was and the guy she was holding hands with.

    TFA:
    - Trench Run reloaded
    - Death Star reloaded
    - Death star reloaded killing the planets scene
    - more soon.

    For me it's Rogue 1.

TFA is basically the same old SW on a bigger scale. Fun to watch, but nothing new or original.

R1 is a side story and I like those ones, when you tell a story that it's not about the usual protagonists (it's not a case that my favorite Gundam series are "8th MS team" and "War in the Pocket")

    Well said @Crowsfoot !

While I admit that I liked TFA better than Rogue One, that Vader/Rebel scene at the end was by far the best scene of either movie!

@Aginor : you PERFECTLY summarized how I feel about TFA and Rogue One. The story in TFA was quite a bit of a re-hash of A New Hope, but I felt for the characters and had an emotional investment in what happened to them. Where TFA shines is the passing on of the torch from the old cast to the new ones (which was always the hardest task facing this new series).

Rogue One on the other hand was far more original, but I didn't really care about the characters. Each movie's strength is the other movies' weakness. Plot/originality vs. character development / emotional attachment.

The way I view TFA is a setup for the rest of the trilogy. I truly believe that The Last Jedi will surpass both TFA and Rogue One. I could be completely wrong (because I only have a few minutes of spliced trailer footage to go on), but I think The Last Jedi will be much more original. If that turns out not to be true, then it will be a huge disappointment.

Oh I remember.... I try to forget.... but I remember.

Nope, I remember it well. Which is why I am angry that movie makers haven't learnt from it apparently.
The Leia appearance was a pure fan service scene and could have done SO much better. In fact if they had just cut it out it would have been better. IMO.

The thing they should do is: Show it 50 people. If at least two say it looks bad, cut it and replace it by something else. And judging by the reactions of fans worldwide I am 100% sure that there would have been 50 people seeing either movie who would have told them it is a bad idea. There were practically no positive reactions on that scene at all as far as I have seen. That's what test audiences are for.

So you are saying that only 4% of people can tell the difference...
Most people would call that a success.

and I don't think you are going to do better with practical effects either.

The best test would be to show the movie to people that have absolutely no prior knowledge of Star Wars and see if they find it jarring. For us, it's a tough sell because we already know ahead of time that it is CGI trickery.

No it isn't necesaarily about being able to spot a difference. I would be OK with a reasonably close looking actress that isn't Carrie Fisher people would understand.

Or you could show her on a hologram transmission. Easy since those have terrible quality.

Or even if you just showed her from behind, like the scene actually does, and it works well! ...until they spoil it with the closeup scene. Even if you dont compare the person you see to Carrie Fisher you will notice something is weird about her.
Same with Tarkin but WAY more subtle. That one I could live with.

Yeah and that's what made her look weird. An artistic decision I just don't agree with.

Personally it didn't bother me too much either way. The scene could be changed or left as is and I'm happy.

I think most people were either impressed by it or indifferent. That's not to say it was perfect, but not too bad. It won't be long now until they have it 100% fully mastered.

    I liked both movies.

The CGI didn't phase me, ...didn't notice it during the film. I was happily fooled. :)

I think it will become commonplace for actors and actresses to be scanned for later CGI when they are 20, again at 25, maybe once more at 30. With future CGI they'll be able to play themselves as different ages in one film seamlessly if they have lengthy careers.
