Inspired by some posts in Just For Laughs, I've created this thread where we can share everything that was great about our childhoods, where we can share our favourite things, reminisce about ages past and put up videos of all the best bits. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up, as most of our forumites are of differing age groups and generations, so it should be interesting to see what appears. Also those forumites who are still children, by all means post your favourite things in here too - you can share what the latest generation has to offer!

First category then - Favourite TV Programmes! What were your fave shows when you were a child?

Here's a portion of my list:
Thomas the Tank Engine (the originals of course - this is one situation where I think the originals are the best)
    Postman Pat (Again, the originals)
Bill and Ben (I was born far too late to see the original version of this one but at around this point they made a new series which retained the charm of the original yet expanded the setting, with all sorts of little animals living in the garden alongside the main characters)
    Andy Pandy (Same as above)
Come Outside (Featuring Nurse Gladys Emmanuel from Open All Hours, this one was great at giving youngsters an inside look at how things were made)
Fourways Farm (A little-known programme that featured puppet farm animals exploring simple scientific processes)

These are just some of my favourites from when I was little - what have YOU got to share?

Knightmare was brilliant. I never saw it when I was young but when I was older I saw repeats on Challenge and I’ve been a fan ever since.

I am so miffed that they’ve stopped showing it lately in favour of Ninja Warrior! :rage:

I was a Steve Irwin Crocodile hunter kid growing up.

We also had a show on PBS called Kratt's Creatures I freakin lived for, I wasn't allowed to watch too many cartoons.

But as soon as I was a bit older I watched a steady diet of power rangers, any season that was on I'd watch it. Hilariously enough, my mom did let me watch Bones...

I had a really weird childhood

I miss him. Of course he was a bit annoying on TV but his enthusiasm for animals was real.
Sad that he died so early. But I was actually surprised he wasn't eaten by a crocodile or killed by a snake or casuary. Impressive guy.

Some of my favourites when I was older include:

    Raven
    Redwall
    Horrible Histories
    Merlin

And while most kids my age were watching stuff like football programmes and that sort, I was watching historical documentaries like Battlefield Britain and Terry Jones’ Barbarians (the days of UKTV History, ah those memories...)

And all of this came before I was a sci-fi fan (which started when I was first shown Star Wars Episode 1 when I was 12 and was swiftly followed by Episodes 2-6 and then Star Trek TNG, TOS, DS9 and Voyager, Battlestar Galactica and a lot more recently Alien and Predator).

Raven is a fantasy game show where youngsters carry out physical and mental challenges under the watchful eye of Raven, the ancient warrior who can transform into the eponymous black bird at will and carries a staff of great magical power. Groups of these youngsters compete against each other throughout a week of games until on the Friday they face the Last Stand which features Raven’s nemesis, the evil Demon lord Nevar. In the original series there was also a virtually unbeatable obstacle course called the Way of the Warrior which the losing player each day would have to face.

Recently they brought it back after the success of the original series and I think they did it really well - they kept most of the format of the original and even though they introduced a new Raven, the old Raven still appears in each episode as a Jedi Master figure if you like, which I think is great as I grew up with the original series and to see the original Raven still going is brilliant. The storyline of the new series seems to have been designed as a sequel to the original rather than a complete reboot which I also think is great.
