I love that stage, when the wash comes in and suddenly everything gets that definition and depth.

Next up, making Shadrach (left) and Meshach (right) look like their pal Abednego (center).

Since my ambitions for them are limited, I decided to base coat Shadrach and Meshach more quickly than I usually paint, and using larger brushes. I want to have these guys ready for a game tomorrow, not ready for a painting competition--not that I want them to look crappy, mind.
    IMG_2874.JPG
After I base coated, I edged the headplate just a bit with some lighter paint, and then washed on shade paints.

    IMG_2875.JPG
I'm letting them dry right now, but here in a bit I'll go in and apply layer paints and do some edging, I guess. And some clean up of the "outside the lines" painting my base coating resulted in. Then, tra la, they're basically done except for ground effects and edging on the bases!

I admit I was a bit sceptical when I saw your base coat picture, but the end result looks pretty good!

Never trust the base coats the layering makes or breaks it :p

    Absolutely.
I have the same problem with my own models. I enter the "oh-no phase" while painting the basecoat usually.

Well, all my modeling and painting plans just got upended. I have pulled the trigger and decided to spend the first weekend in June at my first Age of Sigmar tournament, a five game affair in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. I have built ten models today. I need to paint thirty-one before I leave.

    To do by June 1st.

Paint Lord Kroak, a Slann Starseer, a Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur, a Bastiladon, a Balewind Vortex, three Kroxigor, three Ripperdactyl Riders, ten Skinks with Boltspitters and Star-bucklers, and ten Skinks with Meteoric Javelins and Star-bucklers.

And learn to play in tournaments.

    You are an ambitious guy!

I'm calling the Carnosaur part of this done. I really need to practice my drybrushing on some models that didn't cost me eighty bucks! But overall I'm happy with it. Looks like what I was imagining, more or less. Now to paint the rider.

Looking at the pics you have too much paint on your brush, you want no paint to brush off on your hand, remember 2/3 drybrush coats builds depth and refines edges.
