I am predicting two things for our most reliable unit in the new edition, a slight point increase and that they will be the best troop choice in the entire edition. With the changes to shooting and their Wary Fighter ability, these little guys will be so great at limiting your opponent's shooting. I'm sure there are plenty of changes we don't know about, and in actuality it is impossible to predict, but I imagine these little guys getting even better.

It already works well. I wonder if Skinks see some changes. Either price increase or rules.

I wish a Moderator would round up all these next edition AS2 threads and meld them into one.

They are discussing different elements of the new edition so melding them into one thread would lead to confusion, one thread is discussion AOS2 in general, one Seraphon focus and one Skinks, I can meld the Seraphon focus and Skinks but they are discussing different topics.

yeah I was hoping for a saurus buff, but with the new permanent magic and the ability to cast through skinks..... saurus are about to be extinct.

I hope not, I usually run more Saurus than skinks bc I just like them more.

Was it revealed you can cast through Skink troops? Or skink hereos/AB?

Slann always could (heroes), and it was hinted that it would now be any skink unit. there was an article about it referring to making purple sun safer for us.

Yeah that would be interesting, but probably just through the heroes. I'm hoping they touch the Chameleon skinks. Such a great unit in terms of design, but they need a little love. I wonder how indepth they will go with each faction. So pumped.

I don't think Skinks will be any better than they are now; they might be a bit better in comparison to some other missile units, but it's not that big a difference, especially without a great battalion to boost them like Sunclaw, and with how cheap they are to summon.

If anything, I think lists will run less skinks, because they can be reliably summoned throughout the game, and it's generally better to summon missile units than melee ones, because you can shoot immediately, but it's unlikely you'll make a charge.

I don't think them being summoned or placed will have any factor on how good a unit they will be and the fact they will be boss if the actual release is as the reveals have indicated.

Of course not, but it does mean that you don't have to include them in the initial list to have their utility, which leaves more room for lists that capitalize on the powerful Saurus battalions like Fangs of Sotek, and Sunclaw, that can capitalize on the new CP system to alpha strike when its favorable and add in the shooting with summoning when it's needed.

They don't get any better with the current revealed changes, just less worse than they are now compared to other ranged units. They still suffer from the look out sir rule and have forced targeting if they get locked in combat without being able to retreat. The only difference is that they suffer as much of a penalty as other missile units, because they can retreat in the combat phase if they get charged and have the space to get all of their models 3" away, so their shooting is more difficult to control. If you charge them in to deny shooting, it does nothing unless you leave them in combat for a turn, which leaves models dead and an opportunity for the opponent to lock them in combat with no chance to disengage.

What is the definition of a missile unit? Skinks are never used to actually put out wounds or for their shooting. So I'm not concerned if their shooting gets a little worse. It's already at the bottom of the list for why they are good IMO. Move 8, leadership 10, Wary Fighter and 6 points a piece is all you need to win :)

    Wut?
A group of 40 Skinks in a Shadowstrike and with a Astrolith Bearer nearby has 40 attacks 3+/5+ rerolling all hit rolls and wound rolls of 1.
Effectively that's around as good as a 2+/4+/-/1 attack which isn't bad at all.
It isn't unusual that I put 10+ wounds onto the enemy to be saved.

I regularly surprise opponents by using them for exactly that purpose. They can hit surprisingly hard when buffed, putting pressure on the enemy to kill them so they lose those bonuses.

EDIT: I still agree with you, their attacks are not their best part. :)

Yeah that's definitely a more complete perspective. Thanks Aginor! I haven't play a lot with 40 man units but if you create really good scenarios, they can surprise people.

My units are usually spreading out as far as possible to chaff and/or Skinking around combat and the map, so I don't usually set them up in the best positions to be a real shooting threat. But never underestimate a Skink :)
