Oh and the damn gem colour need to be chosen...still can’t make my mind up / I’m now thinking something like the Morghast blades - ethereal looking with black base - getting white towards the tips, going on what was said above ‘black absorbing light’ then pure white as it’s being released kinda thing. Thoughts?

Lol practise I guess?

This is what I managed to do in roughly 2hours.
(Plus the extra bits that go on top of him - that will go on once completed) just highlighting to go now really then his base and I’m good and done.

That and... well, to be fair: The time I can spend is pretty limited, when I am home my wife, kids, and cat demand my attention as well. ;)

Digging that a lot. I think it would be cool to bring down some of those colors from the "shell" into his body. Like as small stripes or something. Loving this so far.

I think some extra washes in the deepest parts and shell would really make our lighter colors pop.

Thanks :)

I’m in the process of moving house (and 80% of my paints/washes etc are in storage lol) I keep having to nip out to my current local gw to get the odd colour.

I was thinking about the shell myself, over all I’m happy with the outcome but I was intending to add more detail - I often change my mind when painting lol.

Any suggestions on the colour/shaping of additional detail/patterns?

Also I feel like I can do a lot better on my Chameleons - any suggestions?

With the shell maybe do the spine in a lighter colour to contrast against the red (@Ritual contrast contrast) same with the camos more contrast.

Hey Deed! I hope the move goes well!

If you get access to all your washes I would start with a round of shading. You could really strengthen the reds and blacks with some thinned layers of a controlled wash. All I mean by that is just being mindful with where you are putting it, not just throwing it all over the place.

For example the first thing I would do is water down a black wash, then start in the middle of the shell where it is most black and then pull it close to the red, leaving most of it concentrated in the middle. Do that a few times and your blend will be stronger. You can even mix a red and black was together to feather it out omore onto the red. Once you learn to control the washes they can make you look like a pro. I would then take a red wash and put it around the bottom of "spikes" and horns to give them some more depth, again you can mix more colors into your wash to make it darker if need be.

Then you could pop it back out like @Crowsfoot with some brighter colors. But I usually start by darkening things up, so then you get a better idea of how bright you want to go. I always paint for table top, so I go bright when I can. but you need the dark. Bright colors ontop of medium tones isn't bright, if that makes sense lol.

Also be careful when highlighting red. It can turn very pink or orange, so just make sure you test out the colors. That's why going a little darker first should help! :)

Thank you for the many words of wisdom ;P

I shall take them on board, I did leave the shell kind of half finished as it wasn’t the colour scheme I was going for and I still feel it needs something else, I am a big fan of shades so I will indeed do this, but I think I want some more pattern details too, not sure about stripes (feels like more of a carnivore kinda thing)

It’s the gem that bugs me the most ;P

Lol once the bugs there it just gets more niggling :D

Every now and then I get a little
Over addicted and spend a ton of cash on the hobby (more so than usual)
