Even though I haven't finished painting the set, I have started playing. We've been substituting what I don't have done with exotic adversaries or good old-fashioned proxies. I've been playing as the Skink Starpriest (of course, best model ever) and the Branchwych, which I did just for this game.
Over-ambitious freehand texture is sort of my thing it seems. A lot of the bark texture isn't part of the model.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to do those tutorials I've been requested to do anytime soon, I have a big commission on it's way to me. There's also a super-secret potentially life-changing project I'm working on that has a very small success chance. I'll let you know at the end of August the result of that.

Hold on to your fantasy butts, more pictures incoming.
The first of six Tzaangors, took a while, this one. The armour is painted the same as the acolytes only with a green glaze at the end to help stand apart from the blue feathers. Inspired once more by album artwork;
Another fleshy pinky. I love the base on this one, no crackle paint this time, all freehand.
The last of the four familiars. My least favourite too, and I think it shows. Some lazy layering on the legs there.
Another player character I bought just for 'Quest. I haven't played him, the idea was for an option for new players in group games. His skeleton summoning ability is just too metal to pass up. I tried something different with it, and challenged myself to not use my cheaty medium-blending technique. It's all traditional layering and was a bit stressful to pull off.
Those skeletons you see there are proxies, I have more bespoke ones in progress. These ones are rescued from a diorama competition piece I did last year that I destroyed to save precious shelf space.
This might be it for a while (well maybe one more), I'm to return to the commission mines tomorrow. Oh, and that secret project I mentioned was just sort of completed. I'll know if I'm successful next month, then comes stage 2. So cryptic.

Wow. Again.
I have also painted those models above, and as always I look at yours and feel kinda bad for mine.
The microscopic text lines on the book and the Necromancer's staff are great.
I am not a fan of the colors on the Horror but it was executed so nicely that I can't really complain.
The Tzaangors are.... sharp. Very nice.
But....
Why the hell did you paint those crackles instead of using crackle paint???? Just because you could?

A few more player character bits.
This is the proxy for the Dark Elf Assassin. It's essentially the same thing rules-wise, two bladed weapons, throwing stars, poison, agility etc. The only difference is race, which I like to look past. Abominable rat spawn are people too.
A simple conversion from a Blood Bowl Gutter Runner, just gave him the claw weapon from the same kit. I like using Blood Bowl stuff for variety, I'll be doing some Chaos models later.
It was a challenge to do two shades of black, a notorious colour to highlight. It was also my first go at doing a black fur texture.
Some more generic skelly-men for my Necromancer, which I have now started to play with. I'll be using these for all sorts of games, Frostgrave in particular when I get round to it. Skeleton Warriors are useful things to have.

Using the incredible arcane force that is magnetism I can use it as a gaming model or display piece. The gaming base is stored in the hollow underside which is just a Nescafe jar lid.

So the crackle paint doesn't work so well in small areas and gaps between detail, and just dries smooth. At this point I had gotten used to filling those gaps freehand, and found it looked better and honestly I just found it easier. I'll be cutting down on the crackle from now on, only using it for larger areas.Why the hell did you paint those crackles instead of using crackle paint???? Just because you could?

The Acolytes typically take me two to three days (or sessions), the Tzaangor was almost a week. There's a lot of different elements of detail to paint.

It is a brilliant model, and indeed my favourite one of all I've seen from you.
Although that Gaunt Summoner comes close, as it is just jaw-dropping.

In my humble opinion, your work is superior to theirs. Either way, there was no shame in trying. Maybe you can reapply in the future.

Agree. I am sure it wasn't about quality. Maybe it was about style. Their models tend to not have a lot of freehand on them, like for example the scales on your Starpriest. I guess they mainly want to paint stuff in a style that is somewhat reproduceable by mediocre painters, and the paint jobs on a LOT of your models are insanely hard to recreate.

I can see it from both sides hence me asking what he had to do, was there an interview etc.
We all know @neveroddoreven is an exceptional painter and his style is unique, I find it quite rude if all he got was a bog standard thanks but no thanks but this will not be the first time I have found GW rude, personnel experience of entering Golden Demon and being let down by GW staff.

I think I need to clarify a few things, I don't want this thread to be about this.
The application allowed five attachments for photos. I submitted the better photos of the above Starpriest (of course), the first Pink Horror in this thread (because it was painted in the 'Eavy Metal style), my Genestealer Cult models (for 40k, and vehicle stuff), a Wight King (with actual metallics), and Thanquol (just thought it was a good paintjob).
My CV had a handpainted border in ink to make it look nice and I had it reviewed by the hiring manager of my local GW, which was then revised based on his feedback. I emailed GW to find the name of the recruiter so I could address my cover letter correctly too. When I was confident I had done everything right, that was when I submitted my application, five days before the deadline.
I got the reply the next day. I paraphrased earlier, it was more of a boilerplate response saying 'after careful consideration we have decided not to proceed with your application'. Of course I can only speculate, but I suspect that they had already filled the position way before. From what I understand they still need to advertise the job for legal reasons. GW is a big company but it's still a niche thing, it stands to reason there's a lot of Nepotism in their hiring, everyone there knows someone who can paint good and the word of an employee is always worth more than some random guy's CV.
The real issue here is that I made a big deal of it. I was making plans to move to Nottingham. I failed to keep my confidence in check, and of course felt miserable when I was rejected.
I've moved on though, let's move this thread along too. It sucks to leave it on this note, but I'm nipple-deep in a pile of commission plastic and won't have updates for a while. I'll try to negotiate a break at some point and churn out as many models in a week as I can.
