Star Trek vs. Star Wars (and a collection of memes)

George Lucas meant restore the balance as a good thing, but lots of people have brought this up. They also brought up that the Jedi were dominant for thousands of years so restoring the balance could mean an age of darkness. In the Webcomic Darths and Droids, the Jedi Council were afraid of Anakin because he could "restore the balance" for that reason though the player characters took the positive interpretation.


Should George Lucas head Lucas Film again?

George Lucas has two great strengths. Story construction and pushing the envelope of special effects.

He's not very good at romantic subplots. He's not very good at casting. I'd almost say he's not very good at "humaning." He's not very good at cinematography.

In my opinion, the original trilogy was better than the prequel trilogy. I theorize that this is because no smart people around to tell him "no."

If George Lucas directed a new trilogy I'm not sure if people will be able to tell him no. I'm also concerned that not smart people could be around telling him "no."

George Lucas is also getting old. Old people make mistakes that young people do not. Old people cut corners that young people do not. George Lucas is 76.

I have been trying to help my seventy-year old mother set up internet, an email address, and a new computer. It has been...frustrating. Not that long ago I've spent time with my 6-14 year old cousins. In a lot of ways, teaching a new skill to an eight year old and teaching a new skill to seventy year old are very similar. I have taught my mother how to operate the DVD player four times. My eight year old cousin only needs to be taught something technical twice for it to stick forever.

I would rather see George Lucas in charge of Lucasfilm than Kathleen Kennedy but I'm not optimistic. If George Lucas was able and willing to head more films, he probably would not have sold Lucas Film to Disney in the first place. I think he wanted to retire but is now coming out of retirement to defend his legacy.

Even if George was in his prime, I'm not sure he could dig his way out of the hole Disney/Kennedy has inflicted on the franchise. In my opinion, the best way to save the Star Wars franchise is to cut back. They shouldn't create a new film in at least 10 years. They should add a few more seasons to the Mandalorian and create a few animated series but nothing big. Then when the wounds of the Disney sequels are healed, then reboot the franchise in 2030.
